lluvia,

You aren't going to help me out, are you? No answer, no solution. When the questions get tough, avoid them.

It's part and parcel of the growing problem in America; a lack of Critical Thinking.

You weren't a big fan of my "Can we start killing people" thread from a couple of weeks ago. You don't want three time felons being executed, but don't have a better idea on what to do with those people.

When my child asks me how dark does a person have to be before the can use The "N" word, and you have no solution to that.

I thought more about your "WWJD" as I was driving to work. It got me to thinking.

If it were Jesus (and I'm guessing) I would think he would forgive. Probably everyone. If he was to forgive everyone, I guess all the jails would have to be emptied.

If emptying the jails would be is mandate, I would be put in a postion (like you currently) where I have no idea on what to say.

I'll take you off of the grill. We know we disagree on the death penalty and immigration. I'll stick with the cotton candy subjects with you and not try to discuss meaty issues, which is unfortunate.

I'll go to your coffe thread and place an order.

I have to say I am disappointed though.

RE: WWJD -
I think lluvia is implying that she would try to do what Jesus would do - Emphasis on "try" That's the way I read it, anyway. As to what exactly that is...

I think Jesus would tell you to teach your son to act and speak in kindness. Period. I think it's more about whether the choice of word is *kind* rather than whether it's "allowed." If certain words are hurtful to some, don't speak them to or about that person. I think he would apply this standard to everyone, regardless of skin pigmentation or ancestry. (unfortunately, our SOCIETY can't seem to grasp the fact that it's wrong for EVERYONE) I can't quote it verbatim, because I left my Bible in the car today, (maybe neo can help?) but I'm thinking specifically of a passage where (Paul? don't remember) is saying "yes, we can eat or drink whatever we want, but I'm choosing NOT to eat or drink certain things, because it makes my neighbors (probably Jewish neighbors) uncomfortable." I think the same should be applied to language.
Again, I don't have the reference at hand, but there's also a passage regarding *choosing* not to do something that's perfectly allowable for you, but that may cause your neighbor to stumble. As it was presented in our church, drinking alcohol is not a sin. However, if you drink in the company of a recovering alcoholic, knowing that it may cause him to stumble, then it IS a sin.

Do I think it's right that certain ethnic groups can spew hateful language at other groups with no consequences, but the reverse is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE? Hell no! It galls me NO END! I've snotted and fumed over that crap more times than I can count!
But I think a better answer would be to teach the name-callers to behave better, rather than allowing the "victims" to behave worse.

BTW, I do NOT think Jesus would mandate the emptying of the jails. He was pretty adamant about expecting folks to OBEY THE LAW. I've always thought the kind of forgiveness he was talking about was more a personal and spiritual issue, not some kind of carte blanche to do whatever you want with no consequenses.

Just my opinion.

I'd say to teach your son the difference between what's allowed and what's *right*. Is it fair? HELL no! And that SUCKS! But I believe he'll grow to be a better man than most "men" out there today, and I think that's what you want for him. The part that's gotten tricky with my own teenage son is figuring out how to teach him to make kind choices without ending up being used as a doormat....any suggestions you have are welcome!

Sorry if I rambled/babbled

Well said Tannt. 🙂

On another note, ooh, ooh, can I be a victim too?
Thats what this is really all about (not gringo in this case, cause I respect him, but the entire topic), everybody wants in on the "victim" parade...

If we can't have a rational discussion about race relations in our country, how can we ever be considered civilized?
If it ruffles someones feathers a little, so be it. Maybe, just maybe, the discussion can produce some kind of positive result by way of a greater understanding of what others go through on a daily basis.

Here's your $.98 back, now get back in the closet.

Tammy/Tannt,

I like it. As for the ideas of not being a doormat, I don't know if that is the worst thing. I know quite a few doormats and they seem to trudge through gray day after gray day life without any apparent damage. Guess maybe that's why you couldn't get those people kicking and screaming into a discussion like this. You can't see colors if all you see is gray.

I finally got a copy of the White Pride thread and read it from beginning to end. I have to say (other than Ricksamaven losing his cotton picking mind) it was a frank and honest give and take of thoughts. The kind of conversation that needs to happen and often to MAKE things better.

But in the end, its much easier covering the whole issue up and making believe those conversations are pointless, and create more discussions and preconceived notions in the darker corners of our society.

I gots thick skin, and I wear a coat.

here is/was my point.....forgive me if it has already been addressed

where it all went wrong is when someone decided it was a crime it be offended.

who has the right to tell me what i can say? it is MY CONSTITUTIONAL right to have an opinion and to express it. IF i choose to listen to rap music and hear them say **** over and over, why is it that i am white and i say it it suddenly becomes "offensive"......

if it is ok with one group of people to say who give THEM the right to cry when i say it? it is double standards all the way around and the only one that does not get to use their constitutional rights anymore are the white people. especially christian white people.

i am offended by all the rag heads, and their whole religion....i cannot stand the NAACP organization that scream and whine at the drop of the hat....and as a white single mother about to send my white daughter to college and i will struggle to send without any assistance because i am white and i "make too much money"...right.this is the land of equality..?....this is the land that minorities make the rules, demand "their numbers"(which started this whole economy hell) and demand more rights than everyone.

so label me as a racist because i am white. but look around. the most racist people i know are black and mexicans. if you would like to prove my point or even test it out.....i will give any white tree hugger an address in compton they can feel free to drive in and test the blacks out OR i can give you an address right here in alabama to a trailor park and you can test your luck out on the mexicans......good luck making it out alive on either......however all i hear is how whites are racist.........

call me whatever you like, but remember DO NOT OFFEND ME by calling me a racist because YOU dont like MY opinion.

GerriLynne

You are always one with words.......too bad it is a damn shame to be in the income bracket that not pays the taxes and plays by the rules, but try and get a scholarship for your daughter for anything other than sports.....damn near impossible......

Yes this will make 500.

All races have problems from day to day, one of my best friends, a BOTL, who is one of the most generous men I have ever known, has his daughter in a private school and she is catching some "subtile" racism from one particular white teacher.....this is also wrong because I know how she is brought up and what she has been taught by loving parents who are hard working and great people.

It goes both ways it is just that you, MrsDelta, do not have some activist group screaming for your rights and getting publicity at the same time.

We will both be shelled now....guard your six GerriLynn

"now it will make it to 500"

Uhhmmm...why? This kind of thread has been beat to death on here. Some people are racists, some aren't. Black people can use the "N" word....white people can't. Why can't we have "White History Month"...blah, blah, blah.

Get over it....or don't.

i want a 'big chief' day, something more widely recognized than my stupid birthday, a day where a large group of people miss a days work and somebody else pays for it--just as long as I don't get blamed for anything...
