Ok here's a given... if a doctor told you if you did not quit smoking cigars.. naturally you would try and quit because of your Situation and Family... (not all but most)

I just read on another BB'd some poor guy has had to give up cigars because his wife doesn't like it???

Be honest with yourself... would you totally give up something like this that has grown on you not only with addiction but as a hobby also???

Understandable: you have kids and cannot smoke in the house and or find other means to get a smoke in... but to just up and quit and toss away this pleasure for what???

I would hang it up if the wife had a problem with it. (she doesn't so really, it's just in theory). But I would like to think I love her enough that if it was her desire for me not to, then I would stop.

I admire our friend for what he did, and hey...I even got a nice buy on some cigars out of it myself!!

But....darned good question?

Well if I was married and my wife knew that I smoked cigars before we married and then told me it was her or my cigars, I would say to her: "I miss you already".

I started smoking cigars after I was married, so if my wife asked me to quit then I would. If I was smoking cigars when I met her then it would depend on her reasons, given that her reasons where justified then I would. Cigars are something that I do not who I am and I should be able to find some alternative way to express who I am if it was important enough to her.

I don't think my wife would ask me to quit. I don't do it in the house (very often), I still uphold my financial responsibities (very often), and I don't expose our child to it.

If she did, she would have to have a pretty good reason for it. If she did simply to deny me the pleasure, then I would think that this would be the beginning of the end.

I think I would tell her I needed 48 hours to give it serious consideration. Then after 48 hours, I would compromise with her. I would find the outside interest that she loves most and ask her to stop that, and in return I would stop smoking cigars.

It the home version of mutual all out nuclear war. She would fold (I hope).

that wife is not a good wife.

that wife has headaches frequently.

that wife used to live across the dtreet from me.

that wife is gone and the fomer husband is a happier man then he had ever been or thought he could be. it took him awhile to get his footing and now he can run when he want as fast as he wants.

when i quit cigarettes, it never occurred to me that toby had to quit.

the husband you mentioned might as well cut off his nuts, they belong to this woman who came into his life and decided to be what she wanted to be and could care less about him.

My wife loves me enough that she wouldn't ask me to give up something I love.

wow, I usually read posts and then look who wrote them. I am amazed that I totally agree with Rick.

When my wife quit smoking cigarettes I didn't. Out of respect for her I smoked outside. Then when she got pregnant I quit cigarettes.(my choice) Now I have the habit of smoking cigars occassionally. The demand to quit smoking cigars would never come up because we have a mutual respect for each other.

I think this ultimatum is just a break down of mutual respect and to give in is as Rick said

"the husband you mentioned might as well cut off his nuts, they belong to this woman who came into his life and decided to be what she wanted to be and could care less about him. "

What was her reason?

She may be concerned with the health issues. If that's true, perhaps it's more of a forcefull suggestion than an ultimatum.

If a wife or partner simply says "stop doing "X" or I'll leave" then it wasn't a firm relationship to begin with.

My wife let's me smoke as long as I keep the life insurance paid up...

Hmmm well first of all if I had a wife then I would be a lesbian....and if my wife asked me to quit ...hmmm it would depend on how hot she was .... and if we could find other uses for the gars..... HA HA HA!!!
Ok no but realy ... as a wife myself ... I would think as long as there were no health problems, it would not be fair to ask a partner to quit something they loved "just because" ....
I guess it would all depend on the reason behind it......

My feeling is that if my wife ever gives me an ultimatum....it's the beginning of the end anyway. I started after we were married and she is o.k. with it. She complains about my breath in the morning and sometimes complains because I spend too much time online here or smoking cigars outside, but other than that she is fine. I think she actually likes it because it has made her dad and I a lot closer.

Some days I really love my wife and i'd say, yes... i'd quit.

Other days i'm not too fond of her and i'd tell her to pack sand.

But I think i'm with Rick on this one...
