Back when my grandfather was alive and my brothers and I were kids, we spent time on the Puget Sound in grampa's 40' wooden cabin cruiser. This was before the days of "you must stay X number of feet away from the whales" rules and all that.

I tell you, until you see some of these things up close, in a boat and right alongside you in the wild, it's difficult to appreciate just how huge they are. Beautiful, and sightings around here are always newsworthy, but I have always had a healthy respect for these behemoths.
