"Neocon" used to mean a "New" Conservative; e.g. a previous liberal who has moved right and becomes especially rabid about conservatism. Paul Wolfowitz was the archtypical neocon. But I see that "Neocon" has lost that meaning and is now just a expletive meant to discredit conservative views. Try to find me one instance of the term's usage in that piece that retains the original meaning.

The USA Today quote was simply bizarre: the gist of the quote is that local property taxes have gone rapidly upward. The reason given in USA Today is because property values have gone up, local tax collections have gone up. Yet the author of this dubious op-ed uses the quote to support the proposition that the "neocons" have engineered a big swing from local power to centralized, federal power. HUH? This is so disconnected that vertigo threatens my perspective.

It seems to me that rising property tax values are NOT a nefarious federal plot. It seems to me that rising local taxes works AGAINST any imagined federal plan to impoverish state and local govts.

With that out of my system, let me say that I find both parties seem to advance the federal powers at the expense of local control. It seems insidious and inevitable.

Raising taxes is not the only way to provide continued support to state funded programs in the absence of federal support.

How 'bout government reform at the state level??

The government in MY state is definitely broken, and it ain't gonna be fixed as long as the money is coming in.

The author has a point about power being shifted from the states to the federal government, but this is only to combat the series of democracy violations being perpetrated by liberal judges, the ACLU, and state governments and local governments. Consider that in California, we voted to deny any state funding for illegal immigrants...that was overturned by state judges. We voted in Arnold in order to repeal state issued drivers liscences for illegal aliens, that is currently being fought. We voted to ban gay marriages in California, that was outright ignored by local politicians (gavin newsome) and is currently being challenged in state courts (where it could very conceivably be overturned). Our rights as citizens are being stripped away by a few zealous lawyers and judges who would rather MAKE law than INTERPRET law.

I agree that states should have more rights, but not at the expense of violating the will of its citizenry.

Why is it that states want the federal gov to mind there own business until something tragic happens, then the feds arent in there doing enough?

I can't dispute this,it is over my head. I would like to know what would happen if the states had more power, would we still be one nation or 50 small state nations? Would it be better to have one law or rule or have each state make thier on laws or rules? If you want to you can even take this to the extreme and each state has the power over itself and if you want to travel from one state to another you need a pass. I know this is far fetched but the question is how much power goes the states and how much goes to the goverment for all the states? If I remember history(I am not good at this)the USSR failed not because of the idea but because it was corupted at the core? If this is not true let me know. I hope this dose not sound stupid but an honest thought. I think if I knew what the goverment did (in front of my face)this would be a scary place to live. One thing I do believe is - that its not the goverment that is taking from us but part of us ,the loud minority, that is giving to the goverment. Like I said this is beyond me but its as best as I can understand.
