...I gotta give the Sheff credit for how he handled the "situation" last night. Lesser men would have gone into the crowd to deal with that guy.

Schmitty: Could have been, but Sheffield did his best to maintain composure.

Way to go Boston fan. My hero. You sit 18 inches away from the field, so that automatically gives you the right to take a sucker swipe at a Yankee player, and dump your $8 beer on him. Shef may be a Yankee and you may hate the Yankees as much as anybody hates anything, but, that move just cost you your season ticket.

I think it was the chick sitting next to the guy on her right who reached around him and hit his beer from behind. She had that smirk on her face like she had gotten away with something. They'll review the tapes a thousand times and see just who the jerks were.

Shef almost gave the guy a new dental package, I gotta give him credit. He showed some restraint. Also, that security guard. Man, I thought white men couldn't jump. This guy was on the situation like BBQ sauce on a rib. Great job!

My left-coast, unbiased view as I watched it live and on the various replays on ESPN last night:

I don't have a dog in this fight, because I'm an Angels and Padres fan. I was watching last night just because there was nothing else on, and Bosox/Yankees can be counted on for a good game.

I thought Sheffield was a punk.

In time, and if I watch enough replays, I may change my mind, but I thought there was a very good chance that the fan was just reaching for the ball and the beer was spilled as fans tried to get out of Sheff's way. Any Cub fans remember a fan reaching for a ball???

You could be right drnos. I haven't seen the replay on TV. Just read about it in my favorite sports pages...

I felt the fan got excited and was reaching for the ball, when he withdrew his arm Sheffield was all over him and then it broke loose!

It doesn't matter if he was " only going for the ball or not" he had his arm in the field of play. Sheffield did not reach into the stands it was the other way around, and worst yet he made contact with Sheffield's face. the guy's just lucky Sheff didn't go postal on him. goes to show- there are bonehead fans in every city. JMHO. jd

What drnos and Charlie said. BTW,I think the beer that spilled on him was from the female fan to the left of Sheffield. I think he overreacted by taking a halfassed swipe at the fan but then the Pacers-Pistons game replayed in his mind and he thought better of it. X

Yes, all too well. And that was a fan and a player getting tangled, going for a ball at the same time. This is not what happened. The ball was on the ground, The fan was standing and could not have reached it unless he went on the field. This was a swipe, maybe not malicious, but still intrusive. Sheff may be a roid enhanced jerk, but he still deserves his space on the foeld and this guy had no right to "render assistance", or whatever he was doing.

I do enjoy watching spectator sports. I have my home teams that I follow, but I cannot understand, for the life of me, how people can say "they hate another team." These are professional athletes who perform for our entertainment as spectators.

To me it would be like going to a movie and saying I like one actor and hate another, because of the characters they play in the movie.

When I competed in athletic events, there were opponents I grew to dislike, because of the way they played the game, against me or my team; but hating...never.

Yes, hate is a strong word. Not necessarily intended to be in this case.

Steve, you're like millions of other "fans". Committed, but not fanatic. Sometimes I don't understand the hatred either. It is just a game. But to some, it means everything. Hatred for one city because of a sports rivalry may seem uncivilized, but it is part of a team's history and it does perpetuate the fan base. Cub fans hate Cardinals, Brewers, Astros, Reds, and WHITE SOX, and it's all because of the rivalries. Not to mention the way the media handles these issues. Shows like FOX Sports radio, and Jim Rome, and other call in type shows put fans running smack against fans. All good clean fun right? It's all fun until someone gets out of control and someone else gets hurt.

We should not let our loyalty for our teams cause us to hate and disrespect other towns who love their teams just as much. But sometimes we do.

I am a Royals fan. I hate all of you out of pure jealousy

J/K about the hate part. But when talking baseball it's not fun to live in KC
