This idea came to me while enjoying a cigar recently.

If you could have a 10 acre lot of land given to you, to build a smaller house/cabin as a Cigar Hideout, where would you build it?

The land isn't available for resale, you can't pass the land down. It's simply a place for you to go, sit, relax, think and smoke.

It can be anywhere in the world. You can be as exact as a specific stretch of Louisiana land on the Mississippi River,or as vague as 'somewhere out West'.

Would you go far away or stay close to home?

Where would your 10 acres be?

A cliff edge in Cuba.....

In a little whitewashed home like that of Tom Hudson in Hemingway's "Islands in the Stream".

The pad would be 60% open air and 40% enclosed; the 40% for foul weather, intimacy, and crapping.

I'd have a house boy....a paid servant to make me gin drinks and do the laundry.

.......overlooking the sea, with my dock below.

Tied to the dock........ a 50ft sportfisher and a 15 foot skiff.

I could sit, write my novel, smoke, drink , and watch the tide come in.....................heaven.

I already have ten acres in Texas that Im living on right now

Ive got a covered porch facing the east for the morning snrise, and a covered porch/deck on the west for the sunset.

I can smoke inside or out, I can shoot off the back out to as far as the eye can see. The house is wired so Ican listen to the stereo from anywhere in the house or on either porch. Or I can go to the garage which is seperate from the house and do what ever I want or do nothing.

So

I guess Ill stay where Im at and if I need a change, Ill hook up the Ranger boat and head for the lake and watch the sn or moon greet the lake at its whim

On Whidbey Island, with the cabin high on the hill over looking Puget sound. It gets cold there sometimes, but you'll have 10 acres to pull firewood from. Rains alot, but you're gonna be inside by the fire smoking cigars anyway.

Western Perry County, Pennsylvania...

About an hour from where I live, actually where my Mother-in-law currently lives.

I would have to say, creekside log cabin would do me right. (Of course, mountainside, wouldn't be too shabby either.) You turn the lights out and you can see millions of stars on a clear night. I'm talking no streetlights for 5 or 6 miles, then there is only about a dozen or so. No major traffic routes, not close to any airports, no railroads, I am talking you can hear a pin drop a mile away at three in the morning! The deer love to graze in the front yards, no one cares if you play your music a little loud, they are too far away. It would be close enough to get away for a weekend, but far enough away that no one comes to bother you.

But then, if you are giving me ten acres for free, as long as the scenery is decent, I would find a way to use it!

I would have to agree with Andytv except that mine would probably be in the Keys....somewhere that I can wake up and go fishing while enjoying a nice cigar

LOl @ mklein...where in Texas?

On thing to consider is convenience. If the 10 acre get-a-way is too far away one could not enjoy it on a regular basis. So for me, I'd need it to be in north or north east Texas.

However if it were pure fantasy and I could use my transporter to beam over there, a tiki hut on a tropical island would be nice. I have never been to the Keys, but Key West has always fascinated me.

Well I doubled it, I have a cabin on 20 acres in the north woods of Gods country (Wisconsin). Whether its in my easy chair in the living room or in the kitchen at 4:30 am or in the Sun Room facing the east over looking the pond or outside in the garage. I enjoy my precious hand rolled tobaccos on a regular basis.

I agree that convenience is a must so I would limit myself to a 2 hour drive from where I am now. That said

Some place on Blood Mountain in Northeastern Georgia. This is the highest point on the GA section of the Appalachian Trail @4,458 feet. I always wanted an A frame style log house with lots of porches and a large outbuilding to tinker in. Required amenities hot tub, steam sauna and wine cellar as well as a big gourmet kitchen. Last but not least is a big azz aristocrat filled with my favorite sticks.

Thought about this a bit...and I can only answer with places I've been to thus far in my life. There are many beautiful places I have yet to go, where I'm sure I'd like land, but for now, these will do:

-Coast of Maine: Perhaps around Camden. No further north than Bar Harbor and no further south than Portland.

-Cinque Terra (Italy): Would love to have a place in one of the villages with my own little vineyard. Ahhhh, that place is a little slice of heaven.

-Lake Thompson (northern Manitoba): Remote. Pristine. Wooded. Fishing. Beautiful.

-Major cities like London, NYC, etc.: You know what 10 acres would be worth????!!!!
