There was a homeless guy who lived in my neighborhood in South America. He hated me and my buddies because we were Americans and used to throw rocks at us and cuss at us in English and Spanish. We would yell and curse back but never touch him because we were afraid of getting busted. One day I went outside, and he was passed out in front of my door. I viewed it as a little present and stood him on his feet and told him to get the hell out. I was pretty rough with him...some sort of revenge for the way he treated us.

When I went back inside, I began to think about what I had done and felt bad about it. That guy was an A$$hole but he needed help. I went outside, bought the guya sandwich and a coffee and fed it to him. From then on, he no matter how bad he treated us, I treated im good. I would ask him if he needed money, food, whatever and provided it to him. We eventually became very good friends, he cleaned up his act and moved back in with his wife.

I changed my attitude about life then and never looked back. I am much happier about life and myself since then. My morals and ethics are somewhat religiously based, but more than that, I know I want to be like the guy who helped out a homeless guy in need.

Yo Mo'sMan:

Very interesting point. I guess Hitler's beliefs were just as true to Hitler as the maven's beliefs are to the maven.

...how about an International set of laws that govern "crimes against humanity" (set forth at Nuremberg) that say that "murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation, and other inhumane acts committed against any civilian population, before or during the war, or persecutions on political, racial, or religious grounds...etc" are against International Law and punishable by the World Court?

Mo, don't bring a bb gun to an artillery battle.

and that is true for everyone. what you have to consider is how your decisions will be accepted by society -- both locally and globally. there is no question that two people in a given community can have very diverse feelings on a given subject, but both of them are right . . . in their own minds. rick is right. adroomi is right. jonr is right. i am right. will we be judged for our feelings? of course. that's what we do. we judge. we decide how the beliefs of others compare to our own. that helps validate and enhance our beliefs. we are dynamic people. our beliefs are just as dynamic. as we are exposed to new experiences we adapt. we learn. this is fundamental. this is life.

i wish i could drink scotch at the office. man, i need a drink after spewing all that junk.

That's the most ridiculous attempt to bait someone into an argument that I have seen.

Hitler was not right. In his mind maybe, but when society, culture, law, and mankind itself call your ideals WRONG then you are not right. You are either a criminal or insane.

You cannot mix philosophy and ethics with LAW. It doesn't work. LAW overpowers ethics by legal action, not just moral debate. The debate will be lost.

I agree. We can only hope that our laws are rooted in "good" ethics and morals.

ahhhhh......now that's what I'm talking about!

who are the lawmakers, and what laws are we abiding to?

Many don't know this, but the laws that Hitler broke were not enacted or written until after the war. In other words, what he and his sadistic genocidal murdering buddies did was not against any international law and could not be punished until the law was made AFTER the fact.

Even though they are "abosulute", any good system of law will allow for adaptation and interpretation, as well.

morals and ethics come from our parents. we then leave the nest, experience the world and find out so much of what was ingrained is just flat wrong.

We then develope our own based on society, religion and experience. What is moral and ethic to us may not work in Africa or the middle East. Are they right or wrong? Do they conform to what we believe?

Oh great Bassdude, now you had to go and bring other cultures and countries into this. Now I'll support your statement and get called a commie, and the "true patriots" of this board will tell me that anything that isn't Baptist and from America is morally, ethically, and divinely wrong! You just had to go there right?

I eat a lot of cereal. My doctor told me I had a natural lack of moral fiber. I'm trying to get it back though......

yep. We all know international law means nothing. Genocide still happens.

Morals and ethics vary greatly even in our country. All military members have seen this first hand. Hang out with someone from Idaho or Montana then with someone from DC.
