eviljar.......I got his point, but as adroomi said it's fairly universally accepted that genocide is wrong. Explaining why or how we as a society came to the conclusion that mass murder is bad strikes me as a stupid question. Why is rape wrong? Why is stealing wrong? Do we really need to break down the reasons behind the evilness of these actions?

lofty.......simple. we set up rules. society is collectively willing to accept certain behavior and unwilling to accept other behavior. usually, we are willing to accept much more than we consider to be morally right. now, what we are and are not willing to accept is largely based on what we find to be moral and ethical, but that fact that there is so much diversity within a given population of what is moral and ethical dictates that we must allow behavior that many will find is against their own moral values.
mo'sman.......that simply creates the dilemma again. In Hitler's society it was OK to exterminate Jews.
ryanpeterson.......The problem with this thread is that it was started by someone that isn't intelligent or informed enough to participate in it. Adroomi tried. Lofty is participating well, and there have been a handful of other great comments that have been on topic. But, Mo'sMan can only take swipes at people - sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly.

eviljar.......Mo- Maybe your parents should teach you to be a little less insulting(i.e. class). Read lofty's response, it was excellent. To add, as a whole, there are many universal crimes that all socities shun. Find me a country that has rape, theft, and genocide written into it's laws. I bet you can't. These things happen in all socities and are punished depending on the laws that exist in the given area.
mo'sman.......pre-civilisation didn't have laws, period. In some places slavery, female servitude, killing christians merely for their religious preference, and raising your children to become suicide bombers is accepted as proper. Is it? Oh, and my parents raised me to whip your tail.......is that OK?
eviljar.......Explaining why we instinctively know these are wrong is beyond me. As far as genocide goes, i've never heard of an animal species killing itself off. Perhaps some we can say some morales are instinct.
mo'sman.......ask any evolutionist how we got to be so good. Survival of the fittest. We exploited our resources better, exploited other species better, and at times, killed other humans better. naturalism has no legs to stand on........something the atheists need to take heed of.
eviljar.......Regardless your smack against the holocaust was tasteless. The fact you won't admit it says a lot about you as a person. You might as well go and insult the kurds, native americans, africans, and the turks while your at it. There are better ways of proving a point than insulting the most tragic event of the last century.
