Maybe 2 years ago someone posted a forum that answered car repair questions. I believe it was used by mechanics as well as common folk. I lost the site 2 hard drives ago. Does anyone remember this? I can't remember who posted it.

It was very helpful and I was able to obtain schematics from the people who replied.

I totally understand.

You may get the 20 questions deal, as they will be trying to obtain enough info to come to some ideas.

My first thought was the A/C lines to the rear. ; )

I'm not big on A/C work, so I asked a couple of the GM guys to take a look, they may know a common problem.

It may take a little time, but I'm sure someone will come up with something.

I checked out the site... I only looked at the trans section of course. This guy crunch has some knowledge, but isnt an expert. He asks too many questions that a seasoned trans troubleshooter/builder wouldnt ask.

Maybe I'm being picky since it's free. But sometimes you get what you pay for... good luck...

By the way, I've been doing transmissions for 28yrs. A shop owner for 17yrs, so believe me I know what I'm talking about...

Mike,

You have to ask alot of questions on the forums, as alot of folks aren't that forth coming with information.

The guys tend to over ask and there is a reason for it.

You should know by now that talking to folks about a problem on a forum is far different than talking to them in person. If you don't cover the bases, only one in ten questions will be answered with any detail.

And FYI, I pay for that site and everything on it.

We get some sponsoring from Alldata and some donations, other than that I pay for it.

What is the big deal if it is free? Why should that make it bad? Typical answer.

I've been doing heavy trucks since 78, I wish I knew what I was talking about, but every time I think I got it all figured out, they change everything. So, I guess I am not as great.

Well, let me give you an example of what I saw.

94 Blazer, has late upshifts. Why would the tech ask what trans is in the truck when only one trans goes in that model with a 350 motor?

Another example, a Ranger with hard engagement into gear(a stick). Tech tells him about possible hydralic problem(master or slave). He was right on until he said that if the fluid goes down again to replace the master or slave.

Why wait till it goes down? It HAS a bad master or slave now. You dont need to wait. They or it should be replace NOW. Not when it goes down again. What if you are in the middle of nowhere the next time it wont go into gear? Also waiting till hard shifting is noticed again may damage the syncro rings.

There is nothing wrong with free except one thing. Accountability. There is no one that can be held accountable for wrong advise, which can cost a person more money in some cases.

I could give other examples but I dont have time.

"94 Blazer, has late upshifts. Why would the tech ask what trans is in the truck when only one trans goes in that model with a 350 motor?"

Habit. Plain and simple. There is a forum policy that if they don't supply all of the info, then it is asked. Whether it is obvious or not.

So, would you rather see a forum that regular users give advice back and forth or where mechanics try and head off stuff with correct info?

No one can read and correct everything, so it gets by.

And one of the things on the site states specifically,

"All repairs should be undertaken by a competant and qualified technician."

I don't know what you want.

Tell you what, Just for you, I'll shut it down, we wouldn't want that type of site affecting your business.

I'm done here. I don't need to justify anything to anyone. Have a good life.

I wasnt trying to be sarcastic like you are. That just tells me you cant take the heat from someone that can VERY easily expose your sites faults, in transmissions only.

No dont close it... it just makes places like my business look even better than before. Not that I need that. I'm in EXCELLENT standing with the BAR and BBB, and 50% of my work is from reccomendations of past cust's.

Oh, one last thing. Why is the tech asking if the trans has been serviced or filter replaced? He did that a few times, thinking it may help.

A service had nothing to do with any of those problems. In fact, with only a few exceptions, a service fixes NOTHING AT ALL FOLKS. It is PREVENTIVE maintainance ONLY.

Thats why tranny shops offer service specials. They know beforehand that 90% of customers who want a service really need repairs. The so called 'trans tune-up' is a gimmic that loser shops use to trick customers. I dont run sucker specials like that.

I'm not saying you are trying to mislead people, but it's still wrong advise.

all this because I asked for the site?

The site does exactly what my expectations are. I want a good idea of what the problem is before I take it in for repair.
