•Patrol Problem: Breakdown or Shakedown?

TUCSON, Ariz. — A sudden onset of triple-digit heat led to a rash of deaths among illegal immigrants during the weekend in Arizona's deserts, with 12 people reported dead between Friday and Monday.

Scores more were saved in nearly 50 rescue operations, U.S. Border Patrol spokesmen said.

The deaths were scattered along Arizona's border with Mexico, but most of the bodies were found west of Tucson.

Under a federal border control initiative, about 200 extra agents have been brought into the region for the summer months.

Heat-related deaths have become common in Arizona as immigrants have been pushed into remote and harsher terrain by agents cracking down in other border areas. The state is the busiest illegal entry point on the nation's southern border.

In the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 55 immigrants died in Arizona because of the heat, according to the Border Patrol (search), out of a total of 172 illegal immigrant deaths in the state during that period.

Temperatures reached 110 degrees Sunday in Tacna, east of Yuma, which is at the California line. On Friday, the thermometer climbed to 106 in Sells on the sparsely populated Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation (search) southwest of Tucson.

It's sad that this happened. If our borders weren't so accessible, maybe it wouldn't happen as often as it does?

I'm sure the U.S. will be blamed.

you know, i kinda do blame the US. why? because we let this crap happen. we let them come over here and get jobs illegally. hell, we damn near encourage it. this is an illegal act. our laws state that they should not be doing this. how do we enforce it? we give them id cards and legal protection when they're caught. what would you do if you were a poor mexican in a border town? you'd make a run for the US. i know i would. they tell you not to do it, but if you make it, congratulations. here's your id card, driver's license and new job. oh, and by the way, don't bother learning the language. we'll learn yours. yeah, it's the US's fault, but we could fix that.

RDC, I don't know what you meant by "I thought about what I packed for lunch today," but I'm assuming you're making light of these deaths, and alluding to the fact that due to how little importance this is to you, you would rather think about your lunch. If I'm wrong, then please correct me.

I'm not going to say anything about the rights or wrongs, nor will I attempt to change your attitude, but I will say that if the above is true, then you are not a very friendly person. Have a bit of compassion. Those may have been illegals, and yes the problem needs to be erradicated, but they were still someone's father, brother, or son. They only thing they were guilty of is trying to unsuccessfully risk their life to put some food on the table for their families. Something that sadly, not too many of us would do. They weren't drug runners and they weren't terrorists. Those folks have much better means to get here than dying of heat stroke in the desert.

Adroomi, you dont know that for sure now do you? You are only speculating.

Fact of the matter is they were died while doing something illegal. So what. There are now 12 less criminals we have to support with out tax dollars. Which by the way does not effect you in the least, does it?

The Dallas School District is wanting to MANDATE that school principals, read, write and speak Spanish so they can better work with the students and parents that do NOT speak ENGLISH! What a load of CRAP!!!

Because the are too lazy to learn English and because too many bleading heart libs want to accomodate the illegals we have to jump through our collective butts for them!

When you left the U.S. did you learn a foreign language to get along or did they all fawn over you and learn English?

Did you know one FIFTH of prison inmates are illegal Mexicans?

Did you know this country spends BILLIONS in health care and education on ILLEGALS while our own citizens including legal Mexicans go with out?

Did you know that ILLEGAL imigration has increased 25% in the past few years?

We can NOT continute to allow illegal entry into this country from any border.

Andy, read my first post. I said it was sad. Our brother adroomi jumped on RDC for his stance on the issue, using assumptions.

I'm not cheering because someone died. It is sad, as I said, but if our border rules were more strictly enforced, this would happen a lot less, don't you agree?

I didn't jump on anybody. I stated that his lack of empathy towards 12 dead people saddened me. I also said that I wasn't trying to discuss the rights or wrongs of it all.......just the lack of caring about a fellow man and how I feel that is sad.

I don't need a policy lesson on illegal immigrants. I also don't need to be schooled on what's going on about them........I just feel bad that our total lack of concern about another human is so evident that we talk about them as if they are lepers that need and deserve to be exterminated. That's the same mentality that the terrorists themselves exhibit when they speak of "us" deserving to die.

I heard a story today on the news where a few radical muslims were cheering on the fact that 8 Illegal Americans in Iraq were killed. Of course, they were only men trying to earn a living and put some food on the table.........That also saddened me.

How is the view from up here? It's really muddy and filthy down there. I'm trying to climb higher, but unfortunatly, it seems the entire world is covered in garbage. I wonder how much longer before the world rids itself of it's biggest problem....us.

As a property owner in southern Arizona I don't particularily like the idea of illegals crossing my land to get to America. They bring with them crime, and cause me to worry at night about who's out there.

As a property owner I also like my wildlife. I also like to go hiking. I'm certain that my grandkids one day would like to enjoy the land that I will have left to them. The thought of them blowing up 50 years from now while out playing kickball scares me worse than the illegals.

Have you any idea how many kids in the world today are dying on a DAILY basis thanks to the mines that we laid over the past 50 years in the countries you named? Do you really want a minefield in your backyard? I guess it's easy to say since we're not talking about your backyard....we're talking about mine. That's the American way....as long as it's not on your land, who cares right?

There are only three countries in the west that have not banned mines. Us, Haiti, and Cuba. Well, I suppose that puts us with some really good company.

How about stricter laws, and a better system of patrolling the border. An agent every 20 paces sounds pretty secure. The problem is where do we find 30,000 young men that know how to do patrols in a desert environment? Don't even suggest the military, they're busy patrolling someone elses border for them.......

Adroomi...It was posted mostly as satire....On your comment about children dying from landmines daily, while I agree there is a serious problem, how many of those mines were laid by the US? Our legacy lies mainly in Vietnam and Korea....Most of the deaths by landmines are occuring in Cambodia (we are responsible for a few there, granted) and on the Balkan peninsula(sp?)
