I picked up this used china cabinet from craigslist for $50. I cleaned it down from top to bottom, added four new magnetic latches for the bottom drawers, new door handles and light bulbs. (I used CFL bulbs to reduce the amount of heat. I will probably only turn them on when company comes by) I sealed up any gaps with waterproof vinyl foam tape. It has a few boxes of baking soda in there to remove the smell of old people.

I will start seasoning it tomorrow to see if it holds humidity. IMAG0256.jpg

very nice ... reminds me of the time my wife came home and I'd tried to convert the china cabinet into a humidor. *that* didn't turn out so well!

LOL. Thanks guys. I really hope it works out. I have almost 3 pounds of 70%rh beads going in tonight, so i will see in a few days how it is holding humidity. I got 4 digital hygrometers (one for top and bottom shelf of each side) to see how it does.

I currently have all my cigars in five 48qt coolers, plus four 100 count humidors, so needless to say, it takes a while to find a cigar I am looking for. Hopefully this will make it a little easier.

Oh yeah, you should have seen the look on my wife's face when I brought it home. Probably should have mentioned it first. :-"

I wouldn't seal it too tightly. I believe that you want it to breathe a bit. I'm not an expert in humidors but I think that some of my coolidors can get a little "funky" if I don't air them out every once in a while. They hold humidity pretty well and I'm not in them very frequently so I have to make sure to routinely check on them and rotate boxes, etc... I'm sure there are others here that can give you more expert advice. I took the lazy way out and purchased a pre-made cabinet Humidor and supplement that with the above mentioned coolidors.

With my current coolers, even if I dont pull any cigars from it for a while, I still like to open them once a month to let them get some fresh air.

Just an update (I know no one cares, but I am excited lol). After about 3 weeks of seasoning with close to 3 pounds of 70%rh beads, I think she is ready to be filled. I have hygrometers on all shelves and surprisingly, the lower shelves read a higher humidity, but I am averaging about 65%. Found a few more air gaps that needed to be sealed and I think it did the trick.
