Do certain cigars need more humidity than others? I have 2 humidors going and they both stay at about 68% but I noticed in each box that some cigars seem a bit more dry (almost dried out) than the others. Any pearls of wisdom?

Calibrate your hygrometers using the salt method.

Did they start in the same condition and one slowly dried out?

I was finding some sticks too dry at that humidity until I found a better way to organized them (trays instead of a big pile) which allows for better airflow. Haven't had a dry one in a while, knock on wood.

Yes, some stix behave/taste better at higher rh% than others.

Part of the fun of this hobby is figuring out how to care for different cigars.

For instance, Oliveros Classics need to be kept much drier than Padron.

Check for air leaks.

Are the dry ones near the lid or the window if it has one.

If you have a bovida pack?

If so put it and your hygrometer in a Ziploc bag and see how far off it is.

And speaking about humidity........

Now that the temps outside are running as LOW as 85 at night and hotter then hell during the day, we keep the house at 79-80 degrees.

At these temps do I need to raise or lower the humidity inside the humidors?

Ping Mr. Tokash if you'd like to talk about temp vs. RH. We're due for that talk again..... [sarcasm]

You won't need to worry about dry/wet 'smokeability', because the beetles are going to consume them for you.

If you're regular ambient temp is going to stay that high, you may want to invest in a wine cooler.

Would love some insight on temperature vs rh. Mine often goes from 63 to 70 degrees...any cause for concern?

Thanks.

Rclay wrote:

Yes, they all started in the same condition and just a couple seemed to have dried out and the rest are fine.

Hey, a topic near and dear to me, LOL!

As mentioned above, I'd check the calibration of your hygrometer. To me, 68% RH is as high as I go, and I prefer slightly lower... around 65% seems to work best for me.

Honestly, if you're anywhere beywen 63-68% you should be fine. What I've found is that outdoor RH (if you smoke outdoors) seems to effect the flavor more than the RH you store the cigars in. If it's really humid outside, I've had draw problems and lack of flavor. I used to live in PA until a few weeks ago, and in the summers there it would be 60-90% RH outside... here in NM the highest I've seen it was right after it rained and that was about 40%. It's been averaging about 15-20% here, today it was 9%, LOL!
