All corn plantings need enough plants to be able to have good pollination of the "ears". so the kernels fill in.
Corn does better in "blocks" of rows, instead of 1 long row, again better pollination as the pollen from the tassel needs to get on the "silk" from the ear to make the kernels. I will often go down the rows when the tassels are dusty with pollen and shake them to disperse the pollen, this is called "Tasselling" a block.
Hybrids are created by planting 2 different corns in a block near each other, then one of the corn types has all the tassels cut off/detasselled, then the other corn's pollen will be the one to cross with the other corn, thereby giving off a hybrid seed.
