Does not compute.

Jay, in your search for good stogies, I recommend this guy's review's:

https://kohnhed.com/

He pretty much only critiques sticks that friends of his send him, doesn't receive and evaluate free sticks from cigar companies nor does he receive any other form of compensation from them that I can tell. He is as much of a FILTER as he is a PUMP of product and isn't afraid to call Cigar Aficionado/Advisor out on their (often) BS reviews. He calls it as he sees it. Only issue is sometimes friends send him some pretty obscure stuff thats very hard if not impossible to find but a lot of what he reviews can be had right here on CI/Cbid.

He's also a hoot to read - was a bass guitar player for The Police and some other bands and has some great stories that he intermixes with his very colorful reviews.

Naturally everyone has their own tastes and you may end up generally disagreeing with his opinions but it gives you a good place to start IMO.

Also I follow CigarObsession on youtube and halfwheel.com, two other review sites that seem to have set up a good firewall between them and cigar producer influence/money.

Last, as you have suspected, there's a sh.tload of talent and experience here on this site and they can make great, informed recommendations (once you find and mute out the prolific [but minority] very fake Platinum Members Squad (PMS, perfect acronym). Their noble mission is to scare away as much bidding competition as possible w/ sophomoric level hazing and circle jerking. (I'm looking at you TonySpaz [If Bif from BTTF and Brick from Anchorman had a gay love child, that child would be TonySpaz]). Many of these few also suffer from Chronic Stockholm Syndrome. Criticize any aspect of Cbid (present debacle included) and you do so at your own peril. Aside from TonySpaz (I singled him out specifically because he's a PMS leader on very high doses of Midol, is particularly noisome AND is a Hillary Clinton Surrogate) but the rest of the PMS will reveal themselves to you soon enough...probably in response to this post, at my expense I'm sure (hopefully they don't take away my birthday) making it even easier for you to identify. My gift to you, fellow noob.

Enjoy the journey and welcome aboard!

Licensing system, can't bring handguns/AR-15s anywhere except the gun range.. and can't open/conceal carry anywhere.

Those restrictive laws do serve a purpose, though! They make sure all the criminals' victims are defenseless and can't resist, which makes the criminals' jobs much safer and easier!

I collect things I want to keep, I buy cigars to burn.

I keep telling myself that..... maybe one day I'll believe it. Welcome and stuff ya frostback!!!!

Do you like camping?

Buy a cooler. It only gets worse from here. 🇨🇮

I honestly wouldn't bid until this mess gets sorted out. Watch auctions for cigars you like, take note of what they end at and what they retail for on CI. Bid once this crap gets sorted out.

Hey fellas, just joined up over here!

Just recently got into the cigar game. Picked up a sweet 100 count humidor and am going to start building a collection. Was hoping for some recommendations for relatively new cigar smoker! Any suggestions on some sticks that are a MUST try? I see tons of potential on this site! Happy to be here 🇨🇮

Hope to see you all around - just wanted to introduce myself!

Phil is a character, to say the least, but I'm not so sure that is totally correct. He does get stuff from companies AFAIK, or at least he used to but I'll admit, I haven't talked to him in a number of years.

BTW, he was in Curved Air with Stewart Copeland (the future drummer for The Police). I don't remember him ever claiming to be a member of The Police though. Maybe as a session player, but I don't recall.

"must try" cigar lists are interesting. Most of the time, people just seem to list their favorites. A must try to them, but in reality? /shrug

Buy samplers, buy 5'ers, trade, go to your B&M and buy singles. Don't go deep on anything yet, because tastes change. Figure out what you like so far and then come back with that info and find people with similar tastes. Blindly asking will get you a list as long as the product list here.

Obsidian White Noise is cheap (especially here on cbid!) and quite good, especially if you let them age for a long time.

Just my noobness shining through. I've only recently started following him, so I wrote on first impressions here. Very cool that you know the guy. His front page calls out "The Police" as a search term to use if you want to pull up rock and roll stories, but you are probably right, maybe he just ran with Copeland. As far as sticks he evaluates, I recall reading a particular review where he railed on a mainstream reviewer because they talked up a stick which he critiqued as total crap and he couldnt wrap his head around why he said it was so good, come to find out he got the stick from a sales rep of the company explaining to him the disparity. Maybe he used to take sticks from reps and doesn't now on principle? He has lots of review comments from people complaining about CA review being tainted and praising him for not selling out to cigar reps too. Pretty convincing but who knows. Man's gotta eat.

Seems like most guys in the rock and roll business have histories that are multiple-choice, so who knows. I've never met him face to face, but communicated with him a bit in the past, back when he started his reviews. They were really off the wall back then, he's toned them down a bit since. That was all back before all his medical stuff hit and was a very rough time for him, he was very agitated. Phil is a pretty cynical guy to begin with, that just amplified things.

I'm sure most of his cigars do come gifted to him. From what I recall, the pairing up with a manufacturer was something many years ago, it was one or two small time producers or shops (or both) that got in touch with him after finding his original review to be favorable. I believe there was some sort of arrangement, but I don't know if that still exists or if they even exist anymore.

If you were to see the price of our cigars, or even tobacco... you'd want to buy elsewhere too! We are taxed ridiculously. Even with the exchange from cdn to usd, it's worth it. I have been ordering all from USA websites, which has saved me some major $. Plus I have family right across the border so shipping isn't an issue! :)
