So... one of these days I'm gonna retire and hope to have a nice outside cigar smoking area. The land I should get will probably have its share of mosquitos. For those of you that have outdoor cigar smoking spots, decks, patios, etc... do you use any so-called mosquito repelling plants around the area, such as citronella, marigold, basil, lavender, etc... to ward them off?

We have several citronella torches and candles set up on our deck. As we're in a forested area, we tend to get a lot of mosquitoes. If your main question is whether or not they work well, I can't really answer that - I rarely get bitten. I can say that Mrs Monkey will still get some bites but my sons do not. I think if you're prone to be bitten, it's not a perfect answer. YMMV.

And now I'm having de ja vu, like I've asked this before. 🤔

The best bet is to find a spot with few mosquitos. These tend to be lands that have been occupied for a long time. Site of an old homestead for example. Site should be mostly dry but partially shaded by big trees with high limbs but surrounded by open area and maybe on a slight hill or rise. You want breeze and air movement. Mosquitos hate air movement.

If you cant find the perfect land, use lots of fans. I built a porch with 6 ceiling fans and it works. I even have an antique footstool that has a fan underneath to make sure they cant land on your ankles. Mosquitos like shrubbery but it is possible to pick plants that repel mosquitos.


The only way citonella ever worked for me was being in the woods tormented by mosquitos and picking up a wild citron (source of citronella) and rubbing the juice over exposed skin.

A hunter friend of mine swears by thermacells.

There are companies that sell automatic mist systems that spray a liquid made from marigolds. Sprays outdoor area once a day and works. For those who hate screens.

Back when I PCS'ed to Texas in 2012, I bought a house up in Richardson. Had a great patio with a pergola. I had 3 of those citronella spirally things that you lit up and let smoke and a ceiling fan and an oscillating fan and a clip on repellant doohickie on my belt. Also a chiminea with the Pinon wood.

I was smoking a cigar and drinking a Duvel one evening and looked down and saw a mosquito sitting on the clip on thing... sunuvabich... 😉

Edin508 told me about these a year ago. I got a small lantern type and had pretty good luck sitting out front last Summer.

A friend has one of those skeeter magnet things, I think it's good for a 1/4 acre, blows CO2 I think, skeeters fly toward it and get sucked in by a vacuum, dry out and die.

He has it on the far side of his pool facing his house...works well on skeeters, but no help at all with greenheads.

They fog around us but it's really not enough in peak times. The marigold spayers work wonders but you gotta cover the entire fenceline. A close friend of mine had those installed a couple years ago; they spray the yard for 30min to an hour and there's usually little to no problems for the rest of the night.

Thermacell is what we use on our backporch and we have 2 ponds on the place one is 50 feet from the porch

You can clip a battery operated one on your belt.
