Who does he think he is, The Young Pope?

First, I'm not Catholic, but I am hearing some strange things from this pope. He also said you cannot have a personal relationship with Jesus unless you go through the church.

Gene that part is weird to you prolly cause you are not Catholic.

I respect their church but am still pissed they refuse communion to Protestants even at *ahem* their grandmothers funeral.

Methodists allow all who beleive in Jesus as their savior to take communion.

Not a big fan of Catholics on this narrow issue.

And if Frank was hungry I’d sneak him a piece of bread and a nip of wine. It’s only neighborly

That would be tough.

I was aware of that rule, my wife was raised as a Catholic, school, catechism, and church, right up until she left, a long story precipitated by the rigidity of the church visited to a preteen. While engaged I wanted to go to her church and see what it was all about, she warned me and yeah, no thanks.

On a positive note I can tell you our older son got communion from the Catholic chaplain while serving in Iraq. He worshiped with the Catholics because his only other choice was the Baptist folks. The Catholic chaplain welcomed our son, raised as a Presbyterian, of course it was in time of war and he probably didn't contact the pope about to get permission.

Both our sons were Boy Scout at the Methodist church, another pretty reasonable bunch of folks.

If you understood ours you would understand.

As I said it’s a very narrow bone of contention I have with a religion I otherwise respect but one I will always have.

Then again I’d also take issue for the homosexuals and divorced.

You believe it’s right, so be it. It is what it is.

I still respect Catholics. My trip to the Vatican was awe inspiring and my wife was raised Catholic (she also disagrees with the exclusionary communion).

I have parts of my own religion I take issue with. It’s made by man and imperfect as is yours.

Changing the Lords Prayer (or the Catholic "National Athem") is like changing our Nation's National Anthem.
All over a translation or the "interpretation" of a few??
It's total BS.

Do you know how many kids have had their knuckles cracked over decades in an effort to memorize this Prayer?
Most people, whether Catholic or not, know the prayer.

Changing it serves no purpose.

"The word in question is peirasmos [from New Testament Greek] which means both to tempt and to be tested," the Rev. Ian Paul told the newspaper. "So on one level the pope has a point. But he's also stepping into a theological debate about the nature of evil."

Paul added: "In terms of church culture, people learn this prayer by heart as children. If you tweak the translation, you risk disrupting the pattern of communal prayer. You fiddle with it at your peril."

If you come to my church you are welcome to partake. We coincided it not ours but God’s. And as long as you take Jesus as your savior you are welcome to draw yourself closer through the holy sacrament of communion. Our club is less important than the relationship between yourself and god.

Which is why genes original post didn’t surprise me or even seem particularly controversial.

I can’t imagine us turning anyone away who professes a desire to draw closer to Jesus.

It’s just a different focus. Neither bad, I just agree with one more than the other and know I’ll never change a mind.

I can understand yours and not agree with it. It’s not inherently right, it’s just a decision the humans in your church made.

Meh. I should have taken communion at my grandmothers funeral. I was from out of town and they never would have known. I didn’t out of respect to their beliefs however much I disagree.

Cac they are only proposing it for the English version they view as an imperfect translation.

There is nothing magical about the current translation which has been changed in the past as well and very well may be changed again in the future.

I’m sure they put a lot of though in this and I see it as more of a conservative move than radical. They are trying to get it closer to original form.

It’s not my fight but it’s an ancient religion and the current English translation is not ancient. They apparantly think it’s also slightly incorrect (guessing) or at least could be more correct with the original.

It’s not the nfl or the Connie libs. They are around the other corner.

I actually respect this attempt and this pope.

You can refuse to debate it as much as you want. It doesn’t make you correct.

We simply disagree and I can respect that. It is a larger issue I also have with Catholics but again I respect the religion.

Beleive what you like.

Interpretation or application of “commandments” may get tweaked at some point. They have before and will again.

To be fair, we don't even allow reception of the Eucharist to homosexual and divorced Catholics. Why should it be any different for people who don't even accept our teachings?

Tangential bit one thing I really like about Buddhism is they believe if part of your beliefs\religion is proven false through science or otherwise you must modify your belief/religious teaching.

Neither of our religions do that willingly but they do somewhat silently over time. It’s the imperfections of man which can not be totally separated from the church.

Thanks for the bit of Christianity on a Sunday JJ. I’m sure that’s exactly what Jesus taught and has nothing to do with man.

Interesting the arrogant and lack of respect in one direction but not the other.

Maybe the Lord’s Prayer really says to knock peoples teeth out if they don’t do it according to current Catholic teaching and if they don’t like it Fvck them.

That was prolly the original it just wasn’t translated to English well.

I never asked you to defend you faith nor did I attack it. I respect it.

I also wasn’t referencing the particular science you mention above, or anything specific.

We moved from the world is flat or the sun revolves around the earth and such. It just took time. There are more of those ahead of us and our churches will adapt to them however slowly. I just respect the Buddhist embracing of this.

No need to get defensive. I’m not attacking your religion and I respect it although I disagree with some of the things men have determined it it be, as with my own.

My church has a great relationship with the local Catholic Church. I’ve been in many discussions where we don’t entiely agree. They usually don’t say they are laughing g at us lol. There is a respect. Some don’t have it though.
