I despise the way politicians invoke shades of Christianity... I have a cousin who did time with Jim... I don't know what he's up to now, but at least behind bars Jim came to some realizations about the differences between what he preached/believed and what was actually taught in the bible...

Some of my earliest memories regarding religion were comparing the sincere warm feeling it gives vs seeing some of the blatant scams some fall in to in its name. Personal decisions in this great country though.

Yea good ol swaggart. Graham’s son seems sketchy to me too.

Pence to me is cut from the same cloth as Bakker. He uses religion very effectively to get what he wants.

I don’t know what to think about osteen. Just when I think he might be sincere he does something that tells me he isn’t. I go back and forth on rick warren too. I had concluded thumbs down when my old pastor whom I respect deeply used his book as part of a couples worship class we went to.

Fine line between using today’s tools to communicate more broadly or for personal gain.

I don't hate religion Opel, I hate bigots who try to jam their agenda down our throat. I'm done being kind to them. I didn't see you as an ass kisser who hid from truth. Go figure. I never will accept what I see as pure evil. If that's your thing its certainly your right. But why wouldn't I call out the people who hate what I believe in and call me out? Yes, hate is a strong word, but is an honest word. The day they blew up a particular abortion center and murdered 2 friends of mine is the day I started hating them. That hate will never leave me. That was an act of domestic terrorism, no more, no less. Yet they still continue to promote evil.

What formed my opinion on some of this was my experience with my next-door neighbor and his mom. I consider her my second mom and she is the most sincere Christian I have ever met. I believe she has a direct line to God because she is truly pure. Not unflawed or perfect but the most sincere person I’ve ever met in my life.

She left her Baptist church for some reason I don’t know why. I loved her church and their bible school. At the time my church was at a weird crossroads. There was uproar over them welcoming homos.

She joined the first Assembly of God. It was a huge mega church. Their pastor Reverend Crabtree was third in line to the top of the mega church. I went with them to church primarily so that I could play for their basketball team. I remember thinking how fake the services were how overly dramatic the people speaking in tongues, the pastor falling to his knees and crying as he delivered the message. It was clear to me it was crap and uncomfortable.

One day I went over to my friends house and his mom and dad were crying. Reverend Crabtree in a crying fit on the stage of the church fessed up that he was having an affair with his secretary and the janitors caught them in the office. He prayed profusely on the stage and ask for forgiveness and pulled every tool of religion on everyone in the crowd. It was only after that I figured out who the top dog in the first assembly of God Church was.

Fake is fake.

As far as Osteen and Warren and any others, I don't think it does any good to look at the person or their intentions... The message they're preaching is what matters...

With Osteen it's a "prosperity gospel", one that promises you wealth on this earth on exchange for generosity towards God....

I have no problem with people believing that, my problem is when they call it Christianity or use the bible to support these claims... This is not the message of the bible, it is not - by definition - any form of Christianity, and it is directly contradictory to what we see Jesus preaching throughout the gospels...
