taxes and other stuff have contributed mightily to this recent trend, absolutely...
also, it's not so easy to stay on top for over a century, it's been a magnificent run. But lots of things have developed and changed in locations outside of CA making them attractive after decades without these options.
Add in brand new dynamics like being able to work from home for a CA corp that is moving to TX without actually relocating yourself...factors like that and modern communication allow for smaller, less costly moves than even just 20 years ago, maybe 10 years ago...
