I have three La Gloria Cubana Rabito Cochina cigars that are now extinct, I cannot find them anywhere. I plan on smoking one per month, but should I change that to one per year, because once they are gone, they are gone, and they are soooo awesome. Thoughts and suggestions please. Thanks.

I’mma sure many of us are in this same or similar situation and ponder life without those favorite but now discontinued smokes. At best we have a few left of current smokes but know that it would take years to even come close to replicating (…if they can be replicated…).

I tend to lean towards smoking them now rather than later ‘cause iffin’ they’re past their peak but still within range, a few more years may make them well past those joyful days. Plus, iffin’ your collection has other well-aged but now discontinued smokes, you’ll be in the same dilemma with those too.

Here’s another thought: call two of your favorite cigar smoking buddies and smoke the last 3 of those LGC’s with them so that that experience is shared amongst your buddies and you. Will make for a fond memory for everyone.

I think I am afflicted with the same OCD as CoHoMan68 when it comes to the last of a fave cigar, which I hesitate to smoke. I have several single unicorns; extinct or aged.

Most current production of a label rarely taste the same as those made years ago and like wines, some vintages just sparkle. But the sparkle sometimes will fade in subsequent years of production. Palama mentioned the Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2014 OR...great cigar...same with the OR 2016 Black Label Trading Company Bishops Blend - just fabulous...La Palina Goldie Laguito 2012 - excellent. Later releases didn't measure up. This happens even to the most consistent makers. A personal example is the Fuente Don Carlos, my fave of Fuentes. I have some from more than 10 years ago, a few that are about 6-7 years old and a few that are 2-3 years old. The fresher ones don't seem as good as the older ones, nor do their flavors compare to my memories of the older ones when they were fresh. Dunno...could be my palate, but I've set aside the 2-3 year old stock to age some more before smoking while I consume the old stock.


My advice, which I am trying to follow (but the OCD is strong) is to smoke those great cigars soon because if you wait too long they may lose some pop. An example of this is the Tatuaje L'esprit de Verite 2013. Great cigar when I found them years ago...bought two boxes. Finished the first box and a couple from the 2nd box. Still great smokes. Smoked the third from the second box...cigars are now 7+ years old and I was disappointed. They've definitely declined...at least the last one that I smoked.

Smoke them, enjoy them, then continue your mission to find another great cigar. I am gonna miss my AKA Solace's when they're gone. Got 6 left. Everyone I know that's smoked one has said they taste exactly like a toasted marshmallow and they definitely do very strong taste of it.

I have extinct stuff in my humidor I've been sitting on for 15+ years. Can't bring myself to smoke them, would be sad if the last one I ever had was a poor rendition of the original.

I have taken a lot of them on vacations in a herfador but they always come home. Then at home I think ill burn em next time I'm in a hammock or a lounger by the water on a sunny vacation. Or I take em to big gridlife events where we all have a big party after the event is over and packed up. But I never smoke em.

Someday that day will come. Or I'll just sit on them as a reminder of our travels together.

Cupido Criollo original. I was able to grab a couple boxes before they stopped making them around 20 yrs ago. They tried to redo them but it just didn't work. I think I have around 6 left of the originals but once gone, they will be gone forever. I should probably smoke them before they turn into dust.

Edit: I had to look and see how many I have. 5 left, box says box #666, date Nov 28, 1999. Now that is kinda spooky. Box 666 from year 1999 (flip over the NINEs and you get 666). Half naked cherub on the band. I'm thinking the best way to fix the superstitious sign is to burn them.
