slim get a firewall, go to www.sygate.com and download their free version, it prevents anything on your computer going out unless you allow it, and also prevents anything coming in unless you specifically initiate it. This is a must for all high-speed users!!

And you might want to try and update your Norton, they might have new virus definitions that your version doesn't have. Try the "Live update" feature in the help menu.

Hey E, When did I bother you before?

cwilhelmi --- I have the Norton Personal Firewall and the Norton Antivirus 2003 that came with SystemWorks Professional that I just bought about a month ago ... and I do the live update at least once a week.

... will these do?

Slim... they should be fine... are they set to be running in the background at all times?... if the firewall is functioning properly you may occasionally get notices of an attack on your system and that the firewall blocked it... I don't think that I have ever got a notice of a virus except when going thru e-mail and Norton does a good job of notifying you and quarantining the offending email... will occasionally run across a website with malicious content and it automatically shuts down my browser... just have to start it back up. Don't know if any of this helps.

Did you get the software before or after you were attacked? if it was after then I'm baffled!! Norton makes great virus software but I've never used their firewall, I assume it's just as good.

Good luck man, that sucks!!

This is just too bizarre ...

I have done everything as stated at the Symantec site on this virus. I followed their instructions to the letter. I installed their patch for WinME, ran their removal tool, and it says my computer is virus free.

But, as soon as I start surfing the net (I don't even open email) ... the virus warnings keep popping up, one after the other. I have done this a half dozen times now ... this is one persistant 'worm' ...

I guess I can use Symantecs support line, but they want $5 a minute, or $40 per session ... what a rip!

I have run into similar virus alert issues. I had Norton AV several years ago, and I couldn't do anything online without a virus alert. I had to call their tech service a dozen times.

Finally they discovered that my particular computer OS set up was decyphering incoming code in a way that alerted the virus scan firewall. It had nothing to do with an actual virus.

I had to go into "advanced settings" and tell the virus program to ignore certain types of incoming messages and programs to avoid the alert messages. Took a heck of a long time.

When I upgraded to McAfee later, I never had any more problems. Norton used to have it's own OS years ago. The differences between Norton and Microsoft caused a lot of compatibility problems in later programs.

Apparently some anti virus programs have compatibility problems with some computer platforms and operating systems.

OK ...

I've been working on this problem 'full-time' for the past 'several' days ... and here are the results.

I ran three different antivirus programs. The first was Norton, the second was McAfee ... and both said my computer was clean.

Then, I downloaded the 30-day trial RAV program ... and ran it.

It came up with two more viruses that the other two couldn't find ... iframe.exploit (twice) and Win32/neworm_21@mm. The funny thing is ... the latter one was a virus that was infecting one of Norton's 'protect' files ...

So far, it looks like I've got it licked ... but time will tell.

Thanks to all for your help ... and especially DrMaddVibe ... for steering me to Reliable AntiVirus. Even though (by their own claim) they are rated the #2 antivirus program on the market, they were the ones that corrected my problem.

I wonder who's #1???

Now to work on gettting the 'bugs' worked out of my new DSL provider ...
