What's the deal on these smokes? There seems to be a tone of bad PR here, but nothing specific. Are they as good as its CA rating, or just a waste of a good matchstick?

This is no joke ...

... I gave one to my brother when we were out fishing a couple years ago. He got about a quarter through it, and (for whatever reason) 'hurled' his breakfast over the side of the boat.

He looked at me with disgust in his eyes ... and also tossed the Lone Wolf over the side.

He honestly thought I was playing some kind of cruel joke on him ...

So you really can't believe everything you read. I found this from CA's Managing Editor,Gordon Mott:

But a couple that I enjoyed were the Lone Wolf cigars, made by Leon Jimenes in the Dominican Republic, and Hoja Cubana, made by Nick's Cigars in Miami. Some impressive new cigars from established makers were the Felipe II and St. George brands from Felipe Gregorio and the La Aurora Petit Belicoso, another cigar made by Leon Jimenes."

Lone Wolf= Load from Wolf. X

1997 is not 2003!
Leon Jimenez produced these as a top end line as the boom was coming to an end. They were a very different cigar than is currently available. It's a similar situation to the Tamboril line. When first released, they were premium, top-line cigars. As the boom ended and manufacturers saw the handwriting on the wall, a ton of Tamborils were produced and sold in bundles that had little in common with the first release.

Noticed in an old Cigar Aficianado they had a Lone Wolf Vintage with a silver border on bottom of LW band, one question what were these like?

Cannot imagine "vintage" and Lone wolf in same sentance!

The Lone Wolf is in the style of Romeo and Juliet but very very weak flavored. They are well made. I gave one to a friend who said they were OK if you were in the mood for a very light smoke. Try digging deeper on the boards. I think you'll find out more.

i have smoked them along with some other cigars with bad reps. they are nothing exciting, just another cheap smoke.

i just lit a bad frog (cigar), one of the ugliest cigars i have ever seen. just another cheap cigar.

I don't know about the rest fo you ...

... but live is too short to smoke cheap cigars!

i smoke about 7 or 8 cigars a day. usually one premium. i know the difference. my income does not allow me the luxury of smoking all premium cigars.

So, does that mean you would keep these in your humidor along with your primo smokes, or just plant them outside and see if they make a good mulch?

What Steve R. said. The Lobo Rojo, which came out first, was a dark wrapper, rich, full-bodied smoke. As the boom crashed, the "sungrown's" came out and they were just another cheap bundle cigar. Not much flavor, not much smoke, but not much cost, either.

Snowwolf hit it....the Lobo Rojo was a pretty good cigar, unlike the current Signature. I have aged some of the Signature's for at least 18 months and unlike most cigars they do not improve. Kind of like smoking air....

Quality not quantity......you should cut back too....it's bad for you.

Until I have the luxury of smoking 7-8 cigars a day, I think I'll stick to slightly higher priced sticks as my everyday smokes like my $2 El Rico Habanas, 2.40 Padron 2000s, or the numerous other cigars you can get in the ~$2 range, especially on Cbid. I get no satisfaction smoking the "cheaper" smokes as they simply aren't as full-bodied as the "higher" priced sticks (in the ~$2 or higher range) I'm now smoking.
