An open letter to the Dixie Chicks: Earlier this week, while performing in London, you stated that you were ashamed that our President is from your home state. I wonder if you realized how many Americans would be listening. This American was listening. This Texan is ashamed that you come from my state. I serve my country as an officer in the United States Navy. Specifically, I fly F-14 Tomcats off carriers around the world, executing the missions that preserve the very freedom you claim to exercise. I have proudly fought for my country in the skies over Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan without regret. Though I may disagree wholeheartedly with your comments, I will defend to the death your right to say them, in America. But for you to travel to a foreign land and publicly criticize our Commander in Chief is cowardice behavior. Would you have so willingly made those comments while performing for a patriotic, flag-waving crowd of Texans in Lubbock. I would imagine not. How dare you pocket profits off songs about soldiers, their deaths and patriotism while criticizing their Commander in Chief abroad, even while they prepare to give their lives to ensure your own freedom of speech. Please ask yourself, what have you done to deserve that sacrifice? Do not try to justify your comments by claiming that you made them only because you care about innocent lives. Never once in our history have we committed troops to war for the purpose of taking innocent lives. We do it to protect innocent lives, even yours. If the world leaders of the late 1930's had the vision and courage of our present Commander in Chief, perhaps the evil men who caused the death of millions in WWII would have never had the opportunity to harm a soul. The potential loss of millions of lives in the future at the hands of today's evil men necessitate action. In a separate correspondence, I am returning to you each and every Dixie Chicks CD and cassette that I have ever purchased. Never again will I allow my funds to support your behavior. All you have done is to add your name to a growing list of American "Celebrities" who have failed to realize that they have obtained their successes on the backs of the American blue-collar workers such as our servicemen and women.

To Natalie Maines: This Texan, this American will continue to risk his life to guarantee your freedoms. What will you do to deserve it?

Mag - Ironically my wife asked me to pick her up the latest Dixie Chick CD yesterday. You can imagine my suprise...Well, needless to say, I showed her this thread and she said "We Will Never Buy Another CD from the Chicks". They should think before they slander our Commander in Chief!

I see the support for free speech is alive and well on this board. Its amazing how history repeats itself, I heard this same sort of thing when anyone criticized Johnson or Nixon during Nam. If you don't want to buy their records, fine. However, to question their patriotism for criticizing Bush is nonsense.

What about our free speech? I think they were UNAMERICAN!! They were on foreign soil, on the eve of a war? Or had it started yet? And were patronizing their audience. If they disagreed, they could have talked about mamma, or trains, or getting drunk, or prison, or any of the things that make country music great, "I was drunk, the day my mamma, got out of prison..." There remarks were uncalled for, unpatriotic, unacceptable, inexcusable, and I for one will exercise MY right to "change the channel" if I EVER hear another whiney peep out of their scrawny little bleached blond heads!!!!!!!

The letter from LT McDowell that smithbw posted speaks my thoughts and feelings as well as I could possibly hope to do ...

In a response on another thread several weeks ago, Tailgater offered a viewpoint that I found to be eloquent and if I could find it readily, I'd re-post it here ... the essence of his thoughts was that this sort of behavior could potentially offer encouragement, however slight, to our enemies and could potentially de-moralize our own troops, however slightly and that the combination of those effects could potentially serve to alter the course of a battle or even the war itself ... at the least, it could easily protract the war and cost lives on both sides ...

Comments of this sort from "entertainers" and "celebrities" are shameless self agrandizement of the highest order on their part ... it is completely fitting that their work be boycotted ... not for a short time either ... I can speak only for myself, but in my case, it will be forever ... I have added the Dixie Chicks and Michael Moore to the Jane Fonda list ... people whose works will NEVER benefit from a single penny that I have earned or that anyone I can influence has earned either .... and THAT is MY right of self expression ...

LT McDowell, on the other hand, has my admiration and my undying gratitude ... my support goes to him and those like him in our military ...

Natalie needs to have her mouth washed out with a bar of soap. However, I will still listen, and likely buy, their music, even though I completely disagree with her opinions (there are two other chicks who I don't think should be judged guilty by association).

My wife and I went to a Chicks concert 2 years ago, and the odds (yes, this is true) were 4 females to one male --- the facility (Anaheim Pond) had to convert many of its mens restrooms to facilitate all the women. Wow, what a great eye candy night it was.
