I heard the rah rah stuff from management and how their problems were all behind them. Something didn't feel right about the place.
I went out on the web and found the forums where the workers for Hostess hang out. Bunch of bitter crybabies. Always focused on what someone else has and how "wrong" that is. Union guys bitching about management, then bitching about the union, then bitching about each other. One night of pouring through their threads was enough to see what a dark, sad place it was (and apparently still is). How the hell can something as happy as a Twinkie be made by such poisoned personalities?
I got a job offer package in writing the following week. Pay increase, company car, bonus program, benefits. I politely refused. Still glad I did.
Thanks for the interesting, firsthand insights, Wolf. There's often much more than meets the eye besides the claptrap written for public consumption.
As a subcontractor/vendor (not applicant), I've had several similar moments with close client friendships- folks working for the wastefully rigid USPS and several other beleaguered corporations...
