My guess is that it is just a threat/negotiating tool to get union cooperation or the BK court's authorization to dissolve the labor agreement (contract). Wonder Bread, Merita and Hostess are brands and recipes that have their own significant value in and of themselves

So let's look at the options. Option #1, take a 8% pay cut, save the company you work for, and continue to have a job in a down economy. Option #2, the company closes down for good, you and thousands of others join the unemployed, and you get to collect 50% - 60% of your salary for the next 6 months while you look for a new job that will probably pay far less then the old one. I know which one I'd pick, but we are talking union workers here.

Same thing happened to the Camden NJ police force a couple years back during the height of the president's recession. Officers where told that the city was broke. Either take a 10% pay cut, or look for work elsewhere. Entire force refused to take the cut, was fired and replaced with officers at a much lower pay rate.

I was smoking with my brother when one of the former Camden officers stopped by for a beer. He had been collecting unemployment at 60% of his former salary, was in debt, his unemployment was ready to run out, couldn't find a new job, yet in his mind, he did the right thing for refusing the 10% pay cut. I still can't understand that mentality.

Oh, and thank you Mr. President. America has spoken and 52% agree that this new economy of yours is awesome.

There's a box of Twinkies in that grocery store. Not just any box of Twinkies, the last box of Twinkies that anyone will enjoy in the whole universe. Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date. Some day very soon, Life's little Twinkie gauge is gonna go... empty.

Unions were created out of necessity many decades ago and play an integral role in the elimination of troubled companies.

Let them eat cake.

Hostess Brands Inc, the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, said it will ask a bankruptcy judge for permission to liquidate after failing to obtain wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its bakery workers.

The company said a strike by members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union that started last week was too much to overcome.

The case is In re: Hostess Brands Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-22052. (Reporting by Tanya Agrawal in Bangalore and Carey Gillam; Editing by Saumyadeb Chakrabarty

At least they stood up to the big, bad, evil company. Union principles and increasing your current union wages/benefits are far more important then actually having a job.

6 months unemployment??? HA!!! More like a year with all the extensions the big "O" has added. They probably all voted for the "O" anyway so they'll at least get an upgrade on their cell. And free health-coverage usually comes with unemployment and food stamps so they won't have to pay the big fine either.

And just what does the Tobacco Workers union have to do with making Twinkies??

Watched the same thing happen to the coal mines in PA. Unions and workers wanted more, companies said there wasn't any more - take it or leave it. Then everyone beotched when they where out of work and the mines where, and still are closed. Careful what you ask for! How''s that gub cheese sammich taste?

Oh, and by the way, the 8% pay cut was ordered by a judge overseeing Hostess' attempt to reorganize under bankruptcy. Remember that. A bankruptcy court judge ordered the pay cut, not Hostess management, but I'm sure there will be union spin painting Hostess as big, bad and greedy.

Oh, one more thing. America has spoken. 52% of voters believe that failing companies should to be bailed out with taxpayer money. Why oh why didn't our president listen?

This is truly sad.
Not just because the twinkie has gone way of the dodo. But because of the reasoning employed by the union.

Early on, the plant closing sounded like a scare tactic. But once the court ordered the 8% cut, the union should have worked within the guidelines.

Worse, however, are the sound bites from several of the union members.
Saying things like "it just isn't fair that they expect us to take a pay cut." When told that the pay cut was necessary because the company simply didn't have the money to pay them, the reply was "I don't care about that. I just think it's wrong that they won't pay us."

Hello?
Anyone?

The union mentality has become almost like a cult. Members are programmed rather than educated. This is a sad situation and the timing couldn't be worse. Which makes the union decision all the more revolting.

Add it to their brewery.

Twinkies on flea-bay - $100/box.
Probably the workers selling what they hoarded and stole before the strike.

Here we go.....

Can anyone explain the 3.45 million the CEO got paid per year? I don't suppose the board of directors were making $35,000 a year either. Throw in a few Vice Presidents while your at it.

And yes I realize the CEO took a non pay for himself for a couple months to satisfy the unions a while ago.

Sometime I think you guys want everyone with no home, car, and insurance. Then you can say Romney would have done something for them. Closed a mysterious loophole or two.

Forget unions, what happened to "of the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE, for the PEOPLE. "

Need to change it to, "whatever the corporations want, for whatever the fed can get from their PAC's, screw people. "

Ignorance runs rampant in you're posts, very telling of the posters.

What if the top 10 people at hostess took a 1% pay cut, cut their golden parachutes a touch, and put the company into surplus? Food for thought.

"The industry has overcapacity. We're overcapacity. Our rivals are overcapacity," said Rayburn in an interview on CNBC. Asked if the shutdown decision could be reversed if the Bakers' union agreed to immediately return to work, he responded, "Too late."

Majority of non-union workers agreed to cuts, except for the Bakers Union. Dispute over health benefits and pensions. So now everyone looses including non-unions workers because of a union decision. Good job.

"Too late." Now trying to liquidate assets.

Yes, just like the fairy tale of raising taxes on the wealthy is going to fix the deficit. I wonder what world some of you live in? 8% pay cut on 18,500 employees making an average of $35k a year equals a whopping $52 million required to keep the company from going bankrupt. If the CEO gave up his entire paycheck, they'd still be $49 million short. If the top 10 people where making a total of $30 million (which I really doubt), 1% pay cut would save a measly $300k. Do you folks actually think about what you say, or are you just parroting lib talking points?

But hey, America has spoken. 52% of voters believe these fairy tales.

Maybe the Bakers' Union can pool their pension assets, buy the plants, trucks etc in liquidation.......then run the company right and pay themselves whatever they want!

I say go for it........just don't force the taxpayer to fund the project, like GM.

Is it a bad thing that the employees tired of working indoors & just wanted the time off to weigh other options? No, I don't think so.

It was only five thousand bakers who held out, but 18,500 lost their jobs due to the shutdown. If the news report on tv is accurate. So 5000 employees taking an eight percent cut on $33,000 equals?

$13,200,000.

What's the cost of pay, bonuses, retirement, and perks for the white collar employees?

Why does the guy making $33000 have to carry the costs of everything? Maybe we should all make min wage, that's $16000 a year! Gross. Not net.

If it was a non union company, they would just do it, and it wouldn't make the news. There'd be 5000 more people living at poverty level. Pretty soon we won't be able to buy the crap were importing from china.

After the majority of people get driven into the streets, and the corporations rule, like in the early 1900s, well have another wave of organizing. Just like then. And why? Because those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it. And apparently most here are of that sort.

Why is there never common ground? Corporate profits are at an average all time high, but that's not the workers business to worry about. Is it?
