Opel... Sounds like your a true gardener?

Starting plants in winter is something I've never done but I've known other people with hot boxes outside , window starting kits or actual grow light systems in their basements...

I love to garden, great exercise too...weeding is a real pain in the ass....I'm never around my cabin enough to have a great garden up there...rabbits, deer, bears eat or dig it up all the time...I have it on a sloped piece of ground that gets natural watering by gravity... sometime s it's too wet...
WHAT DOES GROW GREAT IS MY HERB GARDEN AND they winter over seasons sometimes...I had a thyme plant that was 7 yrs old and was totally outside every winter...

Just out of curiosity? Do you lay down plastic or hay between planted rows?
Do you have an irrigation system?

I want to try growing potatoes in ROTTED HAY piled on top of the ground, it looks easy...some books by an old lady about growing all kinds of stuff in rotted hay above ground.

I love gardening!

I start all my peppers indoors with great success... also like to start lettuce inside but it can get tricky in the warm environment... I also use raised beds so no rows necessary...

as for irrigation, I have small backyard ponds that I either bucket or pump water out of and put into the raised beds while replacing the the pond water with hose water... water is still cheap in these parts for the moment...

to avoid weeds:

gather leaves that fall from trees in trash bags... use a shop vac if you want...

when you plant your spring crops, use the leaves to smother any potential weed growing areas...

this will increase insect activity but you can counteract that with small containers (i use red solo cups) with about 2 inches of old vegetable oil and a a generous dallop of soy sauce...

bugs go in to drink the soy sauce and drown in the oil... throw the containers away and replace bi-weekly or as needed...

I love growing potatoes and have used a variety of methods... I would highly recommend you use the burlap sack method...

get a big burlap sack - like a big coffee bean sack... roll the sides almost all the way down... add 4 inches of soil, put 2 seed potatoes on the soil, cover with another few inches of soil...

(The "soil" used can vary greatly... straw or hay can be used but you would want it to be clean and new - not old or used... potatoes are very susceptible to disease...)

when the plants grow to 6 inches or so, roll the sides of the bag up slightly and cover the plants with more soil - making sure the leave the crowns uncovered or they'll die...

repeat that process one to two times during the growing season... don't over do it or the plants will concentrate all their energy on regrowing leaves instead of potatoes...

once that sack is full to the top - or the potato plants reach their maximum life span and begin to die - Don't do anything!

Let the plant die completely... this gives the potato skins time to roughen up a little bit... a "new" potato has skin that can be rubbed away with your fingers...

after the proper amount of time has passed, cut the burlap sack down the side (or dump it out if you plan to reuse) and enjoy your many, many potatoes...

I love the idea of gardening. I just don't have the patience (or attention span?) to tend to details or routine care. I've tried probably a hundred different plants from seed, sprout, bulb, cutting, seedling, and transplant. It really is exciting to watch ....at first....But, my success rate is probably in the teens. I've settled on a few perennials and re-seeders that I can't kill and am satisfied with that. The time and money I've invested in growing from seed just isn't worth it to me....in hindsight

I'm proud Of Opel/Joel, he has kept a variety of heirloom corn that I sent to him for almost a decade now. I sent that stuff ALL over the Country, around 20 of them just wrapped up in clear tape, the entire dried ear, LOL! I just labeled them and took them to the Post Office. ALL of them got to their address. I think I did that around Christmas. Numicorn cards, LMAO!

thank you sir... it's been a joy to do so... been sitting around this wet and foggy morning wondering where abouts it's gonna go this year... I think we may have gotten our last frost of the year... our flock of cedar wax wings is passing through and that usually signals something's changing... thinking I'll gamble and grow last years ears early... gotta bed that's full of rock cod carcasses that's ready...

Sounds like a good plan. Have you tried using it as roasting ears while it's still white (milk stage)?

I have to wait until at least Mid April here for the normal last frost. Although we have had killing frosts even as late as last week of April.

Still debating if I will do much planting at the ld house place/farm.

I'm actually gonna go to the FSA office and considering putting the acreage that was in rented row crops into a CRP program.

Too young to sit at home, but I may do just that for a few months so I have time to fish while the fishing is good.

I'll figure out something to do.

I will keep watching and see how long you can tolerate sitting around the house. Fishing will help, but after almost ten years of 24/7 debilitating back pain and the damn meds, I'm about to consider taking up a part time job.

Actually I have one watching these damn little chihuahuas that we had to take from the youngest daughter after her divorce around 6 years ago!! They're like family now, but still a small job. Doesn't help that not only are they "yappers" BUT also "chit eaters". I've owned dogs most all of my life, but never owned **** eaters?!?!?! Drives me nuts, so I have to watch them constantly and cover it with the odd buckets, etc until I have to make a full blown "pickup" round!!

but, I'm lazy by nature, so retirement hasn't been all that difficult...reading, walking, cigars, sports, fishing, road trips, cooking, family gatherings on week-ends...

I tried to prep for a 5k last year, early Spring, had an app on phone that would let me know how long to walk and how long to jog. I found out after a couple of weeks that my lower spine couldn't handle the jogging part.

I'm gonna get started on regular walking as soon as it warms up in a couple of months.

EXACTLY!!!! It's a common problem with smaller dogs, come to find out, but naturally causes teeth problems, DUH, I can't understand and it is hard for me to deal with, but such is my crazy life sometimes. I actually just went on a poo picking spree after that set of posts, LMAO! Naturally, the little male dropped a fresh round just after I finished getting up 7-8 nugget piles!!!!

Chihuahuas are also THE HARDEST to house break. We have somewhat good success with that, but still have to leave those training pads out during the night and gate them off into only our bedroom area overnight or if we leave for an hour or so.

We have to pay a dog/house sitter ANYTIME we are gone for any overnight or vacations. Something we were already doing for the little Westie that died a few years ago. Sadly they become like family and at 57+, I don't want to deal with losing anymore. Big families come with MANY deaths, and I've had more than my share already! The older I get the bigger hearted I've become and I can't handle the stress as easily. I'm just now admitting to some of the PTSD I dealt with as a teen watching my Mother battle Breast cancer, she passed when I was barely 24.

So when my old CPU sh*t the bed on me, I got a newer, better one. Loaded my iTunes and it's only got the songs I purchased on there... none of the 1200++ songs I loaded from all my CD's.

No worries, right? They're still on my phone... and you can't load them from your phone to the CPU. Mother f***ing f***ers.

What else was I gonna do today? So I'm smoking some St Louis style pork ribs and loading up my music... again.

Thanks, brother. Did 20 years in the Navy, got out, did 13 with the local sheriff. While I had the full time gig, I was throwing varying amounts in my 457(b). The Navy pension allowed for that. Not rich by any stretch, but I can afford to quit working for now, anyway.

As I said... at 50, I gotta go do something, but I don't want to work in the jail any longer, and I get to pick what I want to do since I don't have to make a lot of money.

Compared to running out of money before running out of time, work-direct-to-hole is much more appealing.

Let the chickens out, gathered eggs, and hit the garage

Made myself a mug of hot apple cider with a lil Maker's Mark poured in.

Party Short.

I want to say no to work tonight but if they offer double time, I gotta take it. Sister in law gonna pop out a kid any day now. When that happens, wife's going down there to watch their kids and I'm home with the boy. Part of me hopes it's today so I don't have to go in for my 8th consecutive 12hr shift, but the other part wants it to hold off so I can get double time

Wife and I are off to watch a free practice round at the Phoenix Open. Course is just a couple miles from our place and it's gonna be 72 today so nice day to sit, sip and smoke a few.

They call this "the biggest show on grass" due to drawing about 500K for the week. More than half don't even know there is a golf tournament going on behind the beer party.
