The mileage matters much more that the time frame. 3,000 for conventional, 5,000 for synthetic. Prior to yesterday, I just knew it was the right thing to do for the engine. There are timing chains\belts implications.
Guy came pizzed because he's getting this timing chain/belt replaced for the second time in three years, trying to say the second replacement should be on us. Looking at the vehicle records, they went 9,000 miles without an oil change and filter. This time, over 10,000. Older oil gums things up. The even if the oil could be good for 9-10,000 miles, the filter can't handle it.
The 3 or 5k miles or 6 months is a bit of a Big Auto messaging. Putting less than 3 or 5 k in miles, you can still get away with having the oil changed once a year.*

I understand where you're coming from. As a former grease monkey (boilers, turbines and associated auxiliary equipment such as pumps, blowers, valves and other pneumatic or hydraulic gear) I'm pickin' up the message your boys are puttin' down. Routine maintenance is important. And for the average person... 5k miles is absolutely sound advice.
However... many vehicles are using thinner oil (0W-20, 5W-20, etc) that is recommended to be changed at 10,000 miles. Additionally, I have gone 7500 miles on an oil change, sent a sample of the oil to Blackstone Labs for testing, and was told I could go even further because the oil was still working as it should.
I changed the oil in the wife's old Mercedes every 10k, because it is what the German's recommended and it had 90k miles+ and was still running great when we sold it. Turbo charged 2.0L 4 cylinder.
I've been doing the truck every 5k. Last one went 7500 due to the move and this one will go to 7500 as well, just to get me back to the 5k intervals.
Moral of the story... none, really. Sound advice for the layman. But 9k miles is nothing. Going over 10k is no big deal either, with the right kind of oil and depending on how far over 10k he went. If his belt busted before 60-100k (depending on make/model/interval recommendation)... they should really foot the bill because it was probably a bad one.
