My desktop is a 2014 Mac mini. It won't run my 2022 tax program.

Me neither. I probably don't fully use a laptop's capability, but never went for a Chromebook

Unlike most years, I will make a New Year resolution, I refuse to read/watch/hear a 2022 retrospective. ram27bat

I think it was just over stock stuff. List price was about $330. I got it for just under $200.

Snappy little machine but Chromebooks have very little internal storage. Uses cloud based software and storage within the Google ecosystem.

I really have no use for a Chromebook other than needing to get familiar with it as part of a potential job in the IT environment.

Not sure, but probably not. The RAM and onboard storage is likely soldered into the motherboard.

Gotcha.

Our shooting club has an 11x17 scanner to scan targets and score them using custom software. Our scorekeeper has it on a Chromebook. He cannot run Excel simultaneously, not sure what it has on board.

Google Sheets is Google's version of Excel. Google Workspace is their version of the MS office suite of applications. Microsoft is also going cloud based with their Office 365 stuff.

I'll have to give it a try. I created some automated spreadsheets for registration and scorekeeping, I do not trust human handwriting and calculating.

I think Google workspace is compatible with most MS Office apps, Linux office stuff (OpenOffice, LibreOffice) and whatever Mac are using for their office suite of applications. Opening and saving stuff in the apps between the various platforms might require some tweaking and some cleaning up as the formatting might not transfer over very cleanly.

For example tabs, paragraphs, highlights, fonts and so on might need to be fixed after opening the file in a different plaftorm.
