Seriously drafter... you're missing a HUGE contextual issue.
If a politician is unknown, then it doesn't matter whether a party is incorrectly getting "credit" for him.
If a politician is well known, and well liked, then the only people who are going to mistakenly give the wrong party "credit" are ones which are too stupid to know better.
And even more important, if a politician is getting monuments and plaques, odds are they're dead and whatever great thing they did was long enough ago that there isn't any "gain" to one party or another claiming him.
Seriously... you're 100 years too late to fight a battle over credit for an action 150 years ago.
