But the more this story develops, the more disturbing I find it.
Some random US citizen tweets on their private twitter that trump is a white supremacist. ....
I don't see much of a problem with that. But suddenly the White House Press Secretary, DURING AN OFFICIAL PRESS EVENT states she believes Hill should be fired.
Then, following it up, the President of the United States tweets attacks against her employer? "Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.
So seriously.
If I call Trump a white supremacist on Facebook or Twitter? Do you guys think it's appropriate for the President AND the Press Secretary to use official channels to pressure my employer to fire me?
When you guys called Obama a racist on Cbid forums (a completely public social media forum) would you have thought it was appropriate for Obama to attack your employer on twitter and call for your firing?
This is some seriously messed up sh#t guys. We're talking about the white house directly using its power to try to suppress private citizens from expressing their opinion of the white house.
This is interesting, and with the disclaimer i don't usually get involved in these types of questions, i will answer for the sake of a hopefully intellectual discussion.
the private posting on a public forum, makes it public posting IMO. that posting received a public response from someone who has enough influence to have their answer repeated by media forums. a white house press secretary can do that. with this i do not see a problem. If i am correct from reading your description, Huckabee was asked and answered. it seems like its an IMO response to an IMO twitter post. Whether one comment carries more weight then the other is debatable, because perceived thought in both instance (atleast for me) are that both individuals are a part of larger pictures like the POTUS staff and ESPN. since both involved are public figures known and affiliated with their respected fields, im sure they have morality/public image standards they are required to uphold per their employers.
the first amendment covers free speech, but libel/slander is not covered, and being a journalist/host/reporter saying things like ""Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists." thats now in print, and while opinion may support that, facts currently cannot. this opens ESPN to issues with quite possibly the most litigious POTUS in us history.
If I call Trump a white supremacist on Facebook or Twitter? Do you guys think it's appropriate for the President AND the Press Secretary to use official channels to pressure my employer to fire me?IMO - if you were in that position, and made those comments, i can see the comments that were made be fired right back.
"’m not sure he’s aware but I think that’s one of the more outrageous comments that anyone could make and certainly something that I think is a fireable offense by ESPN."
is it an outrageous comment, yeah its out there. without any concrete facts that can be cited. could comments like that be cited in a company firing someone? sure. you're a liability.
When you guys called Obama a racist on Cbid forums (a completely public social media forum) would you have thought it was appropriate for Obama to attack your employer on twitter and call for your firing?IMO- do i think its appropriate for a POTUS to attack a company on twitter, no i think its juvenile, but that what trump has been doing for years, and hes good at it. also he attacked ESPN programming, not individuals, and he may be an yahoo or SI fan. i do however see to fail where the while house is asking for a firing. saying one can be fired for that and saying fire them for that is different.
This is some seriously messed up sh#t guys. We're talking about the white house directly using its power to try to suppress private citizens from expressing their opinion of the white house.
IMO - while he may not be very popular he still is the president. he has some ability to get face time and media time. if you make public comments on a public forum, they can be seen, passed and replied to. you still have to legally answer and be held responsible for your actions. you cant cry for free speech on one side and then cry that free speech caused you to get fired because no one wanted to deal with putting out fires.
