It's a Sunday evening and I'm curious who is reading the CBid forum. At auction, closing today, is a box of Joya de Honduras torpedoes. They are unknown in the U.S. This is a brand contracted out to a famous Honduran maker by a European group named La Pantera. The brand is distributed in the UK, and La Pantera has said it hopes to market the cigar on the Continent. Not including the VAT charge, a box of Joya de Honduras retails for $191.00 a box in the UK. It's currently at $19.00 bucks on CBid, 90% off retail. I'm going to bid $22.00. Let's see what happens.

Thought about it...........but the "extra mild" in the description persuaded me against it..........maybe next time..............

"Extra Mild"

Interestingly, this has often been a catch phrase to sell non-Cuban cigars in Europe. In Germany, light Connecticut Shade wrappers are extremely popular because there is the perception that the cigar will be mild. For La Pantera to crack the European continent market with Joya de Honduras, it most likely has to be directed to the smoker who doesn't want the heaviness of the Cuban taste profile. Mild isn't bad...ask the folks who own the Macanudo trademark, the largest selling brand in the U.S.

I had to leave my house, so I couldn't keep an eye on the bidding. When I got back, I'd been outbid.
If you do a Google search on "Joya de Honduras cigars" you'll find some information. I expect them to be one heck of deal for anyone who picked up a box.

bassdude, a very gracious offer, thank you.

But...I expected there would be another box within a week, and, tonight I grabbed a box.

Have you tried one yet? Smoked one after receiving and was pleasantly surprised.

I just bought them here, this past Sunday night, so I expect them early next week. My expectation is that they are a flavorful, albeit mild cigar. I enjoy a good mild cigar early in the day, like a Leon Jimenes. Given what these retail for in Europe, I have every confidence that they'll be a terrific value for the $22.00 I paid.

After reading this post, I too won a box at $25. On the weekends I usually have the first tee time at my club and prefer a mild breakfast smoke. Lately have enjoyed the Cusano 18 as a very flavorable mild stick. (but a much more than $1 per stick) I look forward to trying these babies...thanks for the heads-up.

One thing you should know about the Joya de Honduras is that they are, at a minimum, aged four years. They were rolled at the old Consolidated Cigar Co.’s factory, Tabacos San Andrés S.A. de C.V., which shut down in June, 2000, after Altadis S.A. began consolidating its operations in Honduras.

My box arrived moments ago, and the cigars look terrific. They are very firm and appear to be beautifully rolled. I'll know later if these are Sumatra wrappers, as the copy reads, or the notorious TBN. In terms of color, they are significantly darker than Java wrappers.

I bought these, hoping for a creamy mild morning smoke. We'll see... But, you know, for less than a buck a stick, it's pretty difficult to be disappointed.

Last night: My first Joya de Honduras and it was the archtypical boom cigar, extremely mild; actually the mildest cigar I have ever smoked in my life.

There's no doubt that these cigars were rolled to be mild, but then five years of age reduced any strength they may have had.

I'll smoke a few, but, for the most part, these will be reserved for friends who smoke an occasional cigar, and for whom most of my cigars are too strong.

Because of their "look", a box of these would be ideal for a bridal dinner, where the majority of "takers" rarely smoke a cigar, or for passing out before a round of golf.

At $.88 a stick (22.00 for my box)I'm pleased with the purchase. Given my current taste in cigars, I'd have been disappointed had I paid much more.
