Damn I had forgotten about the few liberals that smoke fine cigars.

Liberals are always so quick to call people racists. Since tailgater started the response I will give you a specific and personal example. On my mothers side of the family my grandparents were Italian-American immagrants. They used to tell stories of how hard their parents worked to become part of the fabric of ths country and to integrate themselves in the culture. They used to tell me the happiest day in their parents lives were when they became American citizens. My grandmother and grandfather grew up speaking Italian in the house but their parents would whup their asses if they dared to speak anything but English outside of the home. It was hysterical as a kid to see my grandmother and the Italian butcher carry on a conversation in broken English when they were both more comfortable speaking Italian but neither one would disrespect their adopted home country. They made an effort to integrate their family and cultural traditions into their new lives. 4th of July was a huge family get together but we always had macaroni and sausage and peppers along side our hamburgers and hot dogs. My mother has cousins whose last name is Irish even though they are 100% Italian. At the time her uncle grew up the Irish controlled the unions and Italians were not even considered for jobs. So he did what he needed to do and dropped a few vowels from his last name and legally changed it to something that sounded Irish and got work to support his family.

I could go on about things they did but I think its easier to point out things they didn't do. They made every attempt and put maximum effort into becoming US citizens. They didnt speak their born language outside of the home. They didnt expect signs and tests to be in their born language. They didn't fly their born countries flag outside their home or drive around with it on the hood of their car. They didn't not work and expect health care and welfare and food stamps from their new country. they didn't ignore opportunity and made the best of the education and emplyment opportunities they had.

So I don't think its racism that causes people to have issue with the current immigrants. I think its the "here I am - feed me, clothe me, keep me healthy, and oh while your at it learn my language" mentality that didnt used to exist. And its not all new immigrants that have that mentality. I work everyday with people who were born in England, Columbia, Trinidad, Jamaica, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. They all work hard, got their citizenship and even they are disgusted by the mentality described above.

unfortunately, the biggest problem of all is that both sides continue to talk past one another and do nothing productive to actually solve the problem.

This thread pretty much directly mirrors how the government deals with this issue: each side talks past the other and neither are willing to actually build toward a solution.

Personally, I think it's a little absurd. My family moved here in 1991 from Canada on an educational visa and went through all proper channels to obtain a green card.

We received green cards in 2005, after almost 15 years of working in the USA, contributing taxes etc.

If it had taken 6 more months, we likely would have had to return to Canada, my parents would have lost their jobs.

Before I get slammed as a crazy socialist, I've lived below the Mason-Dixon line for 20 years.

Honestly, you can't fault the people who emigrate here illegally - they are coming from a horrible situation and, if the opportunity is there, why not take a chance? The worst case scenario is that they are right back where they started. Unfortunately, the US government has taken no major steps to rectify this issue, and I can confidently say illegal immigration makes it much harder for legal immigrants to enter the USA.

Also, so we're clear:

Disliking the policy: not racist

Disliking the immigrants themselves? That's another story, but anyone that doesn't understand the frustration people have over all of this is, well, an idiot.
