Short of doing physical harm to your body, the IRS is pretty evil.

Comparing anything we hate today to Gestapo is really not understanding how deep evil can reach.

Although it is political suicide to make mention of nazi/hitler/gestapo etc for anything, I think people do over react.

It's been 70 years.

Apart from the holocaust deniers, we all know they were bad.

But invoking their names or terms does not mean that we think the comparison is "equal".
It's called hyperbole.
It's used to make a point.

At some point we have to learn to grasp the English language and understand how terms are used.
And if some get offended because their genocide was worse than your genocide, then too bad.

Note: living in a town labeled "Land of the Wompanoag" results in an annual reminder each independence day and again on Columbus day how evil we Americans of European decent truly are.

mundane example of how short comparisons here come compared to the horrors inflicted by Gestapo.
Everyone, more or less, hates the IRS. They have caused heartache and ruin, but so short of the comparison as to be "insulting". Perhaps it's hard to explain, it does always fail here.

you aren't wrong. perhaps it is a bit more sensitive to some than others. I, for one, am not hurt by this, just like to point out how easy it is to lessen original meaning of words from said English Language and therefore lessen their historical meaning/importance...creating a population of shoulder shruggers just 70 years later.

I'm not offended, not by this at least, but I get why some are. Again, I think your assessment is correct though.

truly not bothered by the incident nor any posts here. Thanks though. I accept that very little is off limits here, and yet I am drawn a few times a day. I love making points once in a while, hope you aren't bothered either.
It's all good, thanks.

Potato Famine?

Frank, what we need is context and perspective and intent.
If someone says "so-and-so is just as bad as Hitler" then that would be an ignorant statement.

If they say "he's like a mini Hitler, for crying out loud" that would be a reasonable insult.

I hear you when you say "Just" 70 years. But if 70 years makes the wounds too fresh, then how many is OK?
100?
500?

Dwelling on the past is how we get into pseudo-serious discussions about reparations for slavery.
Hell, if we're going to hate on the Germans, then why the love affair with Japan? They are, after all, the last nation to attack us on our own soil.

Politicians need to know better when to use such terms as Gestapo because too many people DO get offended. It's too bad, but it's reality.

I do not disagree with anything you are saying, Mr. Vice-President Dan, especially the context part. Again, I was not insulted by the ignorance of the politician nor by this thread. I also did not know you are Irish, just picked it as a random alternative ethnic related fiasco to use instead of , well you know what, trying to be funny. Fail.

One nit-pick item. It isn't that the wounds are too fresh to poke at that keeps it from being fair game for trivializing with humor, it's that it is an event of such monumentally hideous proportion that it should never be allowed to forget...if only to avoid repetition on ANY group of people. My opinion, you are all free to disagree, I will not cry, I even hear some yawning.

I just fear certain type usage of language, over time, changes the accuracy of recalled history. Like Blacks de-stygmatizing the N-word, using it so as to neutralize its power of hatred, I fear the same can happen accidentally with the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis through funny use of key words, or too much Hogans Heroes

Besides, I thought the Soup Nazi was a great episode.

Enough seriousness, OK?
