My guess is that it is just a threat/negotiating tool to get union cooperation or the BK court's authorization to dissolve the labor agreement (contract). Wonder Bread, Merita and Hostess are brands and recipes that have their own significant value in and of themselves

So let's look at the options. Option #1, take a 8% pay cut, save the company you work for, and continue to have a job in a down economy. Option #2, the company closes down for good, you and thousands of others join the unemployed, and you get to collect 50% - 60% of your salary for the next 6 months while you look for a new job that will probably pay far less then the old one. I know which one I'd pick, but we are talking union workers here.

Same thing happened to the Camden NJ police force a couple years back during the height of the president's recession. Officers where told that the city was broke. Either take a 10% pay cut, or look for work elsewhere. Entire force refused to take the cut, was fired and replaced with officers at a much lower pay rate.

I was smoking with my brother when one of the former Camden officers stopped by for a beer. He had been collecting unemployment at 60% of his former salary, was in debt, his unemployment was ready to run out, couldn't find a new job, yet in his mind, he did the right thing for refusing the 10% pay cut. I still can't understand that mentality.

Oh, and thank you Mr. President. America has spoken and 52% agree that this new economy of yours is awesome.

There's a box of Twinkies in that grocery store. Not just any box of Twinkies, the last box of Twinkies that anyone will enjoy in the whole universe. Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date. Some day very soon, Life's little Twinkie gauge is gonna go... empty.

Unions were created out of necessity many decades ago and play an integral role in the elimination of troubled companies.

Hostess Brands Inc, the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, said it will ask a bankruptcy judge for permission to liquidate after failing to obtain wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its bakery workers.

The company said a strike by members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union that started last week was too much to overcome.

The case is In re: Hostess Brands Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-22052. (Reporting by Tanya Agrawal in Bangalore and Carey Gillam; Editing by Saumyadeb Chakrabarty

At least they stood up to the big, bad, evil company. Union principles and increasing your current union wages/benefits are far more important then actually having a job.

6 months unemployment??? HA!!! More like a year with all the extensions the big "O" has added. They probably all voted for the "O" anyway so they'll at least get an upgrade on their cell. And free health-coverage usually comes with unemployment and food stamps so they won't have to pay the big fine either.

And just what does the Tobacco Workers union have to do with making Twinkies??

Watched the same thing happen to the coal mines in PA. Unions and workers wanted more, companies said there wasn't any more - take it or leave it. Then everyone beotched when they where out of work and the mines where, and still are closed. Careful what you ask for! How''s that gub cheese sammich taste?
