Think Tank: Health-Insurance Premiums Will Almost Double in Wisconsin

By Sterling Beard

October 25, 2013 1:56 PM

Health-care premiums in Wisconsin will almost double under Obamacare, compared with their current rates, according to a report from the MacIver Institute.

The state’s free-market think tank figured the average premiums of the insurance plans the Obamacare exchange offers for several categories of Wisconsinites: 27-year-olds, 50-year-olds, and a family of four from data found on a federal database. The institute then compared those rates with the average premiums on the private market, using figures from eHealthInsurance.com.

MacIver found that rates will jump significantly, especially for the young: A 27-year-old will see premiums more than double in one county in 2014, and see his rates go up by 93.6 percent in Madison, 91.2 percent in Milwaukee, and 72.6 percent in Eau Claire.

Fifty-year-olds will be paying more overall, too, but their premiums won’t go up quite as much, jumping by about half. Families will see their premiums rise at similar rates to young people: A family of four will see a spike of 97.2 percent in Brown County, and increases of just below 90 percent in Milwaukee and Dane counties.

You know, the people who supported Obamacare poo-pooed it when they predicted premiums would go up.

They dismissed it when critics said people would be dropped from their healthcare plans.

They mocked them when they said that employers would move a bunch of full-time employees to part-time to avoid the costs of Obamacare.

They mocked Palin for mentioning Death Panels (Paul Krugman's very recent quote was that this country needs "sales taxes and Death Panels").

And they belittled people who said rates would skyrocket.

All of these predictions came true.

Anyone want to bet on the prediction that it will bankrupt the nation...?

i am not completely for or against obama care if that makes sense

you say will bankrupt as in we are not now? we owe far more than we take in and we have little to no hope of paying it off on anything resembling our current budget.

bankruptcy is usually declared when one can no longer satisfy their obligations based on their current income levels

Obamacare will destroy this country, just like national health care has destroyed all of the other countries that have tried it. It is why Rome fell and it is what killed the dinosaurs.

Btw, we mocked Palin for an unending number of stupid things she said. And the hits just keep coming and coming . . .

Great, go live in one of those other countries. I recommend Greece or Italy...or Spain...France...and so on.

Canada's greatest healthcare virtue is that their southern border butts right up to the US, so they can go across the border to actually get service.

You are a fool who is not even smart enough to know how frickin' foolish you really, truly are.

Yeah, another left-winger when their worldview is rocked by actual facts, denies that the facts are relevant, and mocks the right-wingers for being all doom-and-gloom. You are a true idiot.

I'll never forget the minute Obamacare passed - the rates on my insurance jumped 30%. Prior to that, people were bleeding out their eyeballs about insurance rates going up 10%. Once they jumped 30%? Silence.

None of the other nations you cite (which you haven't cited, I might add) do not have the massive debt this nation does. I'd also point out their GDP is NOWHERE NEAR that of this nation. Why?

Because we generally don't subsidize people. That's basically it.

The more we subsidize people with things like national healthcare, and all of these social services - just like now - our GDP will start dropping. Without a huge GDP there to service that $17 trillion debt, you're looking right smack dab into default. And if you notice, those healthcare systems run in those other countries? Among the largest outflows of cash aside from all of the other living subsidies they offer.

And honestly, by comparison, Palin couldn't hold a candle to you when it comes to saying stupid sh*t.

No,no. You did not post erroneous information. If fact, the OP does not even have information or opinion that are from you. You posted "look what I found". You posted "hear say". How could YOU be wrong?

Ostensibly, you mean how could this editorial opinion piece be wrong? Yes? Because God knows it's only an opinion and a bit short on facts. But it is ripe with conclusion . . . that are by no means demonstrated.

This opinion peice looks at the issue through a straw. And for insighting rage, so much the better.

If you mandate coverages, and the amount the insurance companies have to pay (100% on rotine care) the premium goes up.

Simple economics.

Brewha thinks that somehow this will mange to stick it to the 1%ers.

(Meanwhile the 1%ers own all the stock in healthcare and big pharma companies...and Monsanto)

The government needs to mandate that everyone owns bootstraps.

Now had you said that those that cry about welfare breeding also cry about abortion, that would be a better complaint. The people who have to pay for welfare breeding should be in favor of free (and required) abortions for the poor.

Well... welfare breeding exists. And forcing things on FREE people is counter-intuitive, no?

When you give people just enough to survive on, for doing nothing, and there is no incentive to do any better, you're breeding welfare recipients. We're at a tipping point. The people that are taking are starting to outnumber the people that are putting in.

Rut-roh.

I am a fiscal conservative. If you disagree with me for expecting people to be as personally responsible as I am... I don't know what to tell you. I expect my government to be responsible, too. Neither the dems or reps have shown an inclination toward responsibility.
