Took the wife to Fenway last night for the Sox game.

It was home game #48. We're more than half way through the season. All Star game is next week.

And the only reason my "world champion" Red Sox are behind 4 teams in the AL East is because there aren't any other teams to be ahead of them.

It's official: the Red Sox circa 2014 stink.

But it's seasons like this that make you truly appreciate Fenway Park, the fans, and the city in general.

The game was essentially sold out on a warm humid Wednesday night. The home team are playing a lot of younger guys from the Pawtucket AAA squad.

Red Sox starting pitcher is a first timer.

White Sox put out Sale, who is vying for the last spot on the All Star roster.

Sale owns the home team for 8+ innings and leaves with a 4 run lead and 4 outs to victory.

The Red Sox make a late rally, tie the game, and eventually win it with a walk off double by Uber-Utility-Stud Brock Holt.

Big deal, right?

Well here's the thing: A last place team, during a midweek night game, losing by 4 runs should be playing to an empty ballpark by the middle of the 7th.

Instead, the place is still 95% full when the Sox win the game, and the place erupts like they won the championship or something.

Baseball is my #3 hometown sport.

But Fenway Park has no equal.

You KNOW it's gonna happen.

look at all of the great houses destroyed for the sake of cramming more people in and more luxury skyboxes.

It's only a matter of time.

Don't deny your feelings...you know it to be true...(said in my VERY best Darth Vader voice....for effect...and stuff)

Growing up a Lakers fan, I hate the Boston Celtics, who took our lunch and ate it in front of us many times. So I despised anything Boston by association. I thought that it was karma when Bill Buckner, one of my fave Dodgers before they traded him, "purposely" booted that ball to torment Boston fans as payback. Kinda like your infiltrator blowing up the opposition's HQ, metaphorically. Then Paul Pierce, a local high school star I hoped would become a Laker, does the wheelchair thing on the Lakers. Universal karma evens out over time...just like stadiums get flattened...

Nice reflection, Gater, I'm headed in for this afternoon's game

Your thoughts reminded me of last week's game when the Cubs' pitcher held us hitless for 8.1 innings. After the no-hitter was broken up, Cubs manager came out to remove the pitcher who had a high pitch count. What does the hometown crowd do? Give the opposing pitcher a standing ovation for a job well done. True fans, and pretty classy in my book.

lots of folks (here) knock Boston, many in jest to playfully provoke. Hey, I would do the same. But so many simply have no way of understanding the greatness of a team's fans cheering the opposing pitcher for a tremendous athletic performance.

They bang out the old ball yard game after game, good seasons and bad. The scenario Fiddler described above has been an oft repeated display of the greatness of Boston fans, who may have set the standard when the sold-out Boston Garden crowd stood and chanted as one "Beat L.A." in praise of the Philly 76ers who were about to eliminate their beloved Celtics.

Sure, there has been the odd cretin tossing batteries at players, no different than any other town (though probably far less frequent), but in general...we gots da best.

I always said, the Yankees are the historical class of MLB, while their fans are borderline retarded when it comes to knowledge and class.

I was at a Bruins game in the old Garden. I hate to say it, but I forget who we were playing.

The opposing goalie had about 60 saves and we gave him a standing ovation.

As much as I enjoy the Patriots, the fans in Gillette Stadium are far outclassed by their Boston sports counterparts.

Sorry to interrupt this love fest, but west coast fans haven't evolved to the point where we would cheer a bitter rival who's laying a whooping on us to beat a more bitter rival in the next round.

I can't imagine watching the SF Giants eliminate the Dodgers in the Stadium and cheering them on to beat the Yankees. (I didn't watch that series) But I do understand the respect paid to an opposing athlete for excellence. I was there at Dodger Stadium last year when Mariano Rivera came in to close a game the Yankees were winning. I stood along with the sold out stadium to give him his due when he entered the game. The ovation was so long and so loud, Rivera paused during his warm-up and waved his cap to the crowd. But then when he started pitching, I cheered for the Dodgers to rally, but gave him another SO when he struck out the last batter and walked off the field.

I sense that the Boston respect may depend on the opponent, and doubt that Celtics fans would give Kobe a SO if he were to drop 100 in the Garden. If that were to happen, I'd bet that the only ones left in the Garden to see the last few points would be a few Lakers fans. How about a CC Sabathia perfect game at Fenway?

Follow-up to Paul Pierce: along with the Laker's announcers, I was genuinely mortified when Pierce went down, worried that his career was in jeopardy. At that point, his well being was more important than the game...glad Bird and Magic are friends, though...

Yeah, I guess the cubs fans have more experience with dealing with a last place team, so I can't argue that one.

Please try this experiment for me I will even supply some of what you need.

1. Wear a red sox hat in yankee stadium and around NYC. 2. Do the opposite in Boston. 3. Report back your findings. I already know what the outcome will be.......

you might be surprised to learn that every sporting event hosted in Boston featuring New York teams is literally polluted with New York fans. I have no idea how they get the tickets! There are thousands of New York kids enrolling in Boston area colleges and universities every year that come out in full force, without fear, to every one of these games.

Last week, Fenway was literally overflowing with Cubbie fans. If anything negative occurred, I missed it on the 11:00 news.

Many NY kids settle here after graduation and openly continue their rabid support of their favorite teams, as they should, and live long and pain-free lives...unlike the Boston fans nearly beaten to death in a Bronx bar while watching a game on the TV two years ago.

Tons of people walking about sporting Yankee hats everywhere one goes locally. I have lived here my entire life and have never heard of anything close to what happened to that Giants fan in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium.

Every major league city has lunatics, but we are talking about just the fans, sports fans, not the handful of sick puppies out there in every major city. The sports fans of Boston have a long history of showing admiration and respect when the opponent earns it (except for Darryl Strawberry, but that was pretty funny).

Can you say the same for Gotham?
