WASHINGTON – The Republican-led Senate has voted to block an Obama-era regulation that would prevent an estimated 75,000 people with mental disorders from being able to purchase a firearm.

The 57 to 43 vote to revoke the regulation now sends the measure to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.

The Obama administration rule strengthened the federal background check system by requiring the Social Security Administration to include the names of beneficiaries with mental impairments who also have a third party to manage their benefits.

But critics say the rule was too broad and unfairly stigmatized the disabled. With a Republican ally in the White House, the GOP has moved aggressively to rescind several late Obama administration regulations.

Glad to hear it, I'm not saying all seniors deserve to keep their firearms...especially if they've proven to be mentally challenged however it was way too broad as written. I'm more concerned with keeping them from young punk gang bangers and hood slugs.

I know well how difficult it is to get any 'mental impairment' designation by the SSA. Someone close to me has, what I'd term 'serious mental issues', but has been unable to secure assistance. If someone makes it onto that list, I am all for keeping a weapon out of their hands.

Stop people with documented metal disorders from buying a fire are??? How un-American.

Maybe we can have the new school vouchers be used as credit for school age children to buy arms and ammo….. I mean who would want their child to go to school un-armed?

As an illegal Columbian American immigrant I find the anti illegal immigrant talk very frightening. I'd want to have a few submachine guns to ensure I'm safe from anti illegal immigrant people. Those people are dangerous.
