Plebian Palate Reviews – Vol II: The Musical

Mystery Cigar #2 (to the tune of Nothing Else Matters)

Wrapper’s smooth, with an oily sheen
Reddish brown, the veins barely seen
Six by fifty-four is hardly lean
This smoke is a toro

Ash is dark and a bit flaky
Knocked it off quick for crotch safety
Burn line’s good, if a little wavy
There’s no need to touch up

Pepper at start, but not throughout
Sweetness comes through, I have no doubt
The pepper then fades and I want to pout
And then there’s some raisin

Didn’t think there’d be some cream
Nor the taste so buttery
But it is

Da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da
Da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da
Da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da
(^that was a guitar solo^)

Hints of pipe leaf persist in nose
Carbonated feel on tongue it grows
Pepper returns. My joy it shows
This cigar is intriguing

What this is don’t have a clue
Hope that Google tells me true
Durango?
(^haven’t had one and am staking a lot on the pipe tobacco whiffs I was getting)

Sorry about smoke #2, Z, that wasn't intentional. It's usually a pretty good cigar... glad you liked the IPA.

Stow aways:
Dunbarton Todos Las Dias - had
Boneshaker Full Body Cast - had
Viaje Summerfest 2012 ?? - nh (I've only had the 2020 and 2018)
Crowned Heads Las Mareas Olas ?? - nh

Thank you Dan for the awesome extras! Reviews to come... 🇨🇮

I've not had any of the banded cigars. They've got some age on em all. None short of a year. Probably more but I don't keep track. The CH was labeled by me as a 2016 acquisition but I don't know what it is.. The viaje could be 2012. I had it labeled 2014, when I got it in a trade.

Smoked number three in the dark last night so I’m breaking format here....

It was a very well constructed cigar, extremely firm, preflight was almost nothing flavor wise. Upon lighting it seemed familiar, it tasted like an LFD Cabinet but not an Oscuro. Great slightly sweet tobacco with raisin and molasses. I got 3/4 through this just like this....then on the last part I completely thought I was wrong, at this point it tasted like a Don Carlos but stronger. So now I’m totally confused.

This was a great cigar, I would smoke this again any time, really enjoyed this and it paired nicely with a few fingers of Old Forester 1920.

My official guess? I’m sticking with LFD Cabinet. Thanks Marcus enjoyed this, even the 2nd one was fun even though it kicked my azz.

Man, you got damn close on the 1st one and nailed the 3rd with your pre-guess. Had all the blends and origin countries right!..my hat is off to you sir =d>
And, fyi, I paid less than $10 for the DC so it qualified for a middle range :-"

So, that's my take on the three mystery cigars.
#1 - Honduran yardgar
#2 - Mid-level cigar - Nicaraguan, Dominican (and maybe some Peruvian, help me out here)
#3 - More expensive cigar - Dominican

That's the final verdict.

And I'm not hedging, BUT, it was a close call for me between 2 and 3. I liked #2 the best. It was more to my taste, and I thought more complex, more interesting. The appearance and subtly of #3 made me think it was probably the more expensive cigar.

Now Ron can reveal that I don't know Jackchit about cigars.😊

No 3.

Pretty drunk at 2am. Probably not ideal butt fuggit.

Theres definitely a theme across the three cigars. They all have the same pre light aroma and cold draw. This one is especially funky barnyard/ hay, but could just be the drunky munchys heightening my taste/smell.

Smooth double cap. Visible seams but the leaf veins realign. Double wrapper? Color is uneven but the roll is tight and straight.

First light very mild very sweet. Nice little tickle of a pepper bite on retrohale. Sweet pecan and walnut with some cream are flooding in. I've not smoked an inch of this and I'm calling it high end. This is so good.

Not very smokey, wrapper is dry but doesn't dry my mouth. Sweet woody/nutty flavor right up front with a long creamy finish. 1 inch. Still sticking with high end. Sometimes I forget how good a cigar can be. Even high end smokes, when I go in knowing what they are I think it distorts the experience. I love these blind reviews. Plus it gives me an excuse to smoke 3 cigars in a week.

Burn line is uneven but ash is solid and dark. First tap on the ashtray so it don't go on my shirt. Ramping up the sweetness and legs. This just keeps going. I'm worried it'll go out between draws. Each pull just goes on and on.

1 hour in. I'm falling asleep in my recliner. About halfway but I can't do hour plus cigars so I'm calling it. #3 high end and it was delicious. Zero faults

Damn! I suck at this.

Thanks so much though. It was fun.

I swear I had thoughts about #1 being an old cuban, based on appearance (and being plugged) but I quickly set those thoughts aside.

Nice reviews Dan! Here is the reveal:

http://warriorbreaks.com/misc/cigars/SpringBlindTasting2021_danmdevries_reveal.jpg

1. - JSK Tyrannical Buc Maduro - mid
2. - La Aurora 100 Años Maduro - premium
3. - Padilla Fumas Maduro - low

The Padilla had the most age on it since I've had them. Around 1.5yrs. They are deceiving. 😁

I'm a start on yours today or tomorrow.

Blind #2 from RMAN443

5.5" x 46 (smoked 4/11)
Drank Yuengling Light with the cigar

It looked like a Habano wrapper. Cuban looking
V-cut / cold draw - little tight / cream / nut

First 1/3 - cashew/ cream / pepper / toothy
Burn was uneven with ok draw
Smoke was light

Second 1/3 - cream / earthly leather / oak / nut
Burn evened out
Smoke was better

Third 1/3 - cream / little leather / nut / toast
Even burn
Thick smoke and great draw

Finished smooth

I think it was a Cuban (Cohiba maybe)

blind review #1 from danmdevries

6x52 toro, darker wrapper but not quite maduro dark.

Firm roll, nice firm draw, some veins and smooth seams

1/3
Cocoa sweetness, some wood and leather. Lingering pepper, not creamy, a little dry smoke. medium+ body, mild-medium strength
a litte more pepper, i would say red pepper. Mineral flavor comes in, ash is stacking like dimes, gray/black color, perfect burn
long finish, sweetness and pepper stays on tongue
sweetness is more like sweet tea now, some charred oak notes
2/3
red pepper has ramped up some, razor sharp burn, ash still stacking like dimes, still lingering pepper and sweet tea on finish, some leather and mineral flavors
Medium+ strengh, moving toward medium-full body, got some metallic mineral taste. (the metallic taste could be due to my fasting)
I got wood on retro but I get that with almost all sticks, some wood on finish now, smoke is slightly creamy now, ash just dropped for first time
pepper has ramped up a bit more but not too strong
getting toward the end of 2nd, small burn correction. I'm gussing this is an LFD at this point. Maybe Dominican-Nicaraguan blend
3/3
strength ramped up to around medium-full, close to medium-full on body, some charred oak coming back in, sweeteness tamed down, pepper ramping up
still long finish, some metallic mineral flavor, construction pretty much flawless, sweetness died down more, got some leather coming in
prob bumping full body now, medium-full strength
pepper ramped up a good bit now, strength is bumping full for me now on empty stomach, metallic, mineral, earth notes with some leather
leather stonger now, barely dectectable sweetness, pepper going strong
still almost flawless burn, only 2 minor touch ups needed, stil have some sweet tea and metallic on the finish, ash fell for 2nd time

Total burn time 1hr 20min

This was a pretty damn good smoke, a little one dimensinal to me but the flavors were good. I'm guessing this is the mid range smoke.
Final guess: LFD Coronado

More to come 🇨🇮

Blind Tasting #3

Pre-Light:
About 6” by 46 Corona Gordo. Light brown wrapper with spindly veins. Well packed, but not too tight. Notes of stone fruit on the foot.

First Third:
Spice right off the bat, gave a nice tingle in the nostrils. I’m picking up notes of hay/earth and a little bit of floral on the finish. Burn is not the straightest I’ve seen, but doesn’t require a touch up.. yet?

Second Third:
Burn has straightened out. Medium bodied. Still prevalent notes of hay/earth. Ash is a dark gray.

Final Third:
Draw is getting pretty tight at this point. Flavors are a little muted with not much development. A little bit of harshness has cropped up.

Final Impression:
I enjoyed this smoke, however it kind of fizzled out at the end. While it didn’t smoke like a yard gar, it was the least impressive as far as flavor goes of the three.

This was a tough one as none of the cigars seemed like yard gars, and I enjoyed all three. If I had to guess, I would say #1 is the premium #2 is the middle and #3 is the yard gar. That being said I’m not confident I. These guess and I feel like they could be completely wrong. Will open the envelope tonight or tomorrow and post the results. Thanks for 3 great smokes and snacks Sob. Really enjoyed them all.

Excellent reviews, Jason! I'm happy you enjoyed the smokes.

In the envelope you'll find labels for:
#1 - Nomad Signature - premium
#2 - Fallen Angel - Yard gar (though a good yard gar IMO)
#3 - Warped Futuro - Mid range

I'm actually a little concerned myself. Having smoked the 3rd from you finally, I'm second guessing some of my tentative guesses. Go with the gut, or overthink my way into a strikeout? 🤔
