Second corn crop came off little wormy but good

Hey Jake, do you plant your sweet corn in sets like ppl do for beans?

I thought about doing that next year for the corn instead of trying to have a fall crop. Maybe plant 1,500 in mid May and then 1,000 in mid June. Would put the harvests at mid July and mid August.

Picked a 2 gal bucket full of half runner pole beans. This second set has done better than the first set.

Overall though, the Blue Lake bush beans did the best. Hope that the Roma bush beans produce like the Blue Lake.

So, I guess I've had 4 sets of beans this season. 2 bush beans and 2 pole beans...

Going to eat lunch then go back out and pick tomatoes and carrots.

Been doing some garden maintenance. Removed all the dead/dying squash and zucchini plants other than one that looks pretty good. Glad to see em go really. We got over 600 this year.

Removed all the watermelon and cantaloupe vines as well. Center of the garden looks empty now. I moved my wife's zinnia flower pots to the center so they can get more sun. Did a few other general maintenance things...

Harvested 18 Big/Better boy tomatoes, 8 beefsteak tomatoes and 3 Roma. Got nearly 2 gallons of frozen and cored tomatoes out of it. Couple more gallons and we'll either can marinara or salsa.

We also picked 3 eggplant, 79 banana peppers and 130 jalapenos . Most of the jalapenos were small, but they are some of the hottest I've ever grown. We'll can some and make jalapeno popper dip this weekend.

Watering every other day. Creek is still holding up to the drought. That's about it. Still have a lot of tomatoes and peppers left to harvest.

Picking acorn squash Sweet potatoes will be dug very shortly. I think they’re gonna be small but I think I’ll get lots so I’m pretty curious to see how they are
Most of my peppers are red and ready to pick. Been making some Jake pie I poppers with red ripe jalapeños. Real good
Broccoli got stunted with dry weather. Think I’ll get a little. Turnips just coming up
Tomatoes are all but over with. Still have enough for an occasional sandwich. They were below average but I still had more than enough to eat

I'm going to plant garlic cloves today for next year's harvest.

Still have more tomatoes out there ripening, The weather has been warmer than usual.
More peppers to pick too.

Some lettuce coming along that I started from seed last month.
I'm trying for some fall peas too.

^ where do you source your bulbs? I would love to try growing it and realize it’s about time to do so but I’m clueless. Any help?

Originally, the bulbs were sourced from a local garlic farmer. I plant hardneck garlic. You can mail-order bulbs too but by this time of year, there won't be much available. It's best to plant suitable garlic varieties for your climate. I'm in New York, and many varieties do well here, but I would never try to grow grocery store garlic from California or China.

Then every year I save a portion of my harvest and replant cloves in the fall for the next season
It's best to plant the largest cloves because they will generally give you the largest bulbs and cloves for next year's harvest..
Every clove will multiply and produce bulbs with 5-8 cloves.
It is easy to grow, you want to plant in the fall, around here the 3rd or 4th week of September is the target. That gives the cloves enough time to develop a root system and some top green growth in October before the frost comes to carry them over the winter.

I'm a very small customer, really just some bulbs for flower beds, but I have seen lots of offers for garlic, onions and stuff in emails.

Years ago a friend was the building and grounds head at a major college in Boston and he bought stuff from them.

Still getting:

tomatoes, pole beans(bout done), bush beans, sugar snap peas, few carrots, eggplant, banana peppers, Hungarian wax peppers, jalapenos, bell peppers, cherry bomb peppers and tabasco peppers .

Not happening:

potatoes still "growing", broccoli is small, lettuce didn't grow, fall eggplant didn't grow, squash/zucchini been gone, cucumbers gone and I push mowed the fall corn a few days ago. From August 1st til September 26th it only grew around a foot tall--didn't even tassel.

Wife is canning 12 gallons of frozen/cored tomatoes into marinara right now. We'll have canned 44 quarts of marinara for the season. I think all tomatoes we get from here on out will be eaten fresh, fried green, or made into salsa then canned. Still have a lot of green ones on the vine.

Been getting mild temps & good steady rains, mixed with sunshine, the last two weeks. Haven't had to water.

That's the garden report.

Robert, busy end to the season. Sorry the corn didn’t work out.

It was extremely hot and dry last summer. Most of our fall stuff didn't make it. But we did manage to keep our established plants alive by using water from the creek.

It was a good season for us despite the drought. I look forward to taking a break for a couple months.

Then we'll be back at it again, in February, building some new gardens. We always try to do more & get better each year.

I retired my deck garden a month ago and put all the soil and leftover organic matter and some composted cow $hit into a plastic trash can. Drilled holes a bunch of 1" holes in it the sides and bottom for air and water transfer.

The compost barrel seems to be alive in one short month. Bought some auger thingies to attach to a drill and use that to mix up the bin. Did a drilling today and the soil is warm which is a good sign. Hopefully the bugs keep going to keep it warm and running over the winter.

If all goes well I should have 35 gallons of black gold for next growing season for the deck garden.

^ Thanks Jeebsy. Looking forward to it.

Wife and I picked a couple grocery bags worth of tomatoes this morning. Also picked a small bucket of half runners, Roma beans and sugar snap peas. We've been cooking all three of them together and it's really a great tasting blend.

Tomato plants are dying off, garden is winding down. Peppers are the only veggies going strong. Supposed to get some cold weather later in the week. After the first frost the cleanup will begin, and that will be the end of the 2024 garden.

Over and out.

I got an e-mail from a local Western New York farmer over the weekend. I was surprised to hear they still have 5 garlic varieties available.
I thought they were sold out a while ago. Anyway, I ordered 2 lbs of Music, got it yesterday in the mail, and planted 43 cloves in the ground.
