My civil engineer FIL told me that the reason cities prefer the roundabouts is that they have more, but less severe, accidents. I am guessing that as a result, there are less lawsuits agains the city when there is a serous wreck at an intersection.

Pretty much the only time a city is sued for a crash is when the at-fault driver was on the clock for the city (in the course and scope of employment /respondeat superior), or was driving a city owned vehicle at the time of the crash. A serious design flaw or ignorance of a dangerous condition caused by the city's failure to repair or maintain, is about the only exception.

I wish that were true in AZ.

I was sitting in a county board meeting years ago and heard the board approve a $250k settlement figure for a wreck on a county road where the driver hit a bunch of cacti and trees in the median. It cost them less to settle than to litigate (and possibly win).

They then denied the pay raise for all the cops sitting in the room who showed up to try to encourage them to support LE (the reason we were all there). Arguably, the raise would have cost them more than 250K, but it was salt on a wound to see them pay out in 30 seconds because some guy hit some vegetation...

And let me guess, the driver was at fault for the accident. 😣

That is what we found in GB. More accidents, less severe in nature, but rarely a death.

Gene,
There is a roundabout welcoming eastbound traffic over a bridge in DePere. It is the worst place in the entire county between 4:00 & 5:30 each afternoon. And there isn’t a hospital or anything like that to further bind traffic.

Often the line is 2+ blocks long during those times. It’s taken 10 to 15 minutes to get through it.
And all bets are off if there is a fender bender in the mix.

65 degrees and steady, soaking rain. Just what the new garden plants needed.

Plus all the rain means I don't feel like I have to go out there and work this evening.

Which is good, bc I am exhausted after last week...

They've helped tremendously vs 4 way stopsigns on a couple intersections in my area. It did take quite a while for people to figure them out and I still see people turn left into the roundabout instead of going around and taking the 3rd exit. My favorite though is when people just straight blow em and jump the landscaping in the middle.

The main one close to me is a 5 way intersection maybe 1000 ft off the main highway. When it was a 5 way stop you'd get traffic backed up to the highway. Now it's backed up but rarely into the highway.

When I was in Sedona AZ the roundabouts definitely caused a lot of confusion with all the tourists there.

We have probably 20 in the county. The DePere one is a mistake.

The other 19 help traffic.

What doesn't help is when people never using them before decide to use both lanes because they aren't sure how they work.
Home Packer games are a very good example.

During the NFL Draft, some of the driving was so hard to believe what I was seeing, I thought I was sucked into a Celtic Bomb acid trip.

Good Tuesday Mourning to All! It is overcast and possibly rainy 67° on the way to 81° today.

This evening I have a property owners association meeting to attend. We have a complaint about not being able to install solar panels. When they can integrate them onto the roof itself it will be much better. Our current covenants require shingles, composition or wood. Any change to the covenants is very difficult in South Carolina. Replacing a roof with solar panels mounted is going to be interesting. I'm pretty sure I would not want a roofer to remove and replace solar pannels.

No range trips this week, getting ready for a flight to Chicago, a train ride to Spokane, another plane to Fairbanks, a train to Anchorage, and a flight home.
