Talkin’ about the first song on the first side of an album (…or opening track on a CD).

My 5 in alphabetical order by group / artist:

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze (Are You Experienced)
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin II)
Little Feat - Dixie Chicken (Dixie Chicken)
Rolling Stones - Rocks Off (Exile on Main Street)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Scuttle Buttin’ (Couldn’t Stand the Weather)

Bubbling under:

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog (Led Zeppelin IV)
Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar (Sticky Fingers)
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (Let it Bleed)
Rolling Stones - Sympathy For the Devil (Beggars Banquet)
The Who - Baba O’ Riley (Who’s Next)

What’s your Top 5?

Metal edition
No particular order except for the first one. Pretty much the song that got me into metal.

Accept - Fast as a Shark (Restless And Wild)
Black Sabbath- War Pigs/Luke's Wall (Paranoid)
Metallica- Hit the Lights (Kill 'em All)
Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle - Appetite...
Slayer - Angel Of Death - Reign in Blood

Back when the album was first released and while his parents were on a trip, my h.s. buddy held a party at their house. His Dad had bought a pair of Bose 901’s (…don’t remember if they were the OR or the Series II…) so my classmate wanted to show them off. He played “DSOTM” (…really loudly…) and while I’mma not a big fan of the direct / reflective sound, both speakers and album sure sounded great.

No, iirc, it was the summer after we graduated from h.s. and my friend’s Dad was a military officer so no funny stuff other than alcohol. However , I cannot confirm nor deny that some youthful activities may or may not have happened on the drive to the house. 😁

Not many of the albums I have place my favorite song (from that album or otherwise) in the number one slot...I can think of one: Whiter Shade of Pale on the Procol Harem album...
another: Stayin Alive, Bee Gees, Saturday Night Fever

looking thru my collections:

Monday Morning, Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac

Part of the Plan, Dan Fogelberg, Souvenirs

Pride of Man, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Quicksilver Messenger Service

One, Three Dog Night, Golden Biscuits

You Are the Sunshine, Stevie Wonder, Talking Book

Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Simon and Garfunkel, Bridge Over Troubled Waters

note: some of those above may not fit the "Rock Album" definition...most of my albums did NOT have a fave song as the lead off hitter
