Upgrade of 2004 P4 3.2Ghz 800mhz FSB OVER CLOCKED TO 4.0Ghz, 2 GIGs of CORSAIR PC3500 XMS DUAL CHANNEL Memory!, 256 Meg Geforce FX Video card, Serial ATA RAID of 2 120gig W.D. 8 Meg cache Hard drives, 17 Inch Sony DIGITAL LCD with one more to come. OMG THIS THING FLYS!! OH and the new wireless Microsoft optical explorer. The other board in front of it was the old rig, an AMD 1700+ with half a gig of PC 1600 DDR and the other 2 computers under that are my smoothwall and the Linux box. I am not trying to brag, I love computers almost as much as I love cigars 😉 so I am very very excited about my new computer. After I get the next LCD I plan on upgrading to a new case and water cooling this rig then max it out.

jstiltner, I am always looking for the next best thing if you know of any good LCDs out there that people dont know about i would love to know about them and where i can pick one up. I am looking for a 17 inch with a Brightness of at least: 300cd/m2 and a Contrast Ratio of at least: 500:1 and i really need it to have a Response Time of: 16ms or better let me know if you can hook a BOTL up.

I want to know if I can run an OCR software (ABBYY 6.02) and TTS (text to speech, SAPI 4 and SAPI 5) all the software is written to run under Windows. Does the software have to be written specificlly for Linux or can software written for the Windows OS run under Linux without problems?

Dan,

A better solution to speeding up the system would be to add 2 SCSI drives and make sure that the Windows page file is spread across both drives. Over clocking to 4Ghz will toast that chip in short order and the system speed is improved more with faster drives than with faster processor speed.

The bottle neck in all systems is the hard drive, ATA drive seek time is 8 to 9 ms, the SCSI seek time is 3.2 to 3.7 ms, the SCSI drives also have faster data transfer rates than the ATA drives.

Linux will not run programs that are made for windows, As for overclocking I am not just over clocking the processor I am upping the FSB to push the board and memory to the limits. As for burning the processor up I have pushed every system I have owned to the limits and still no burn out all the way bad to the good ole days of the 400Mhz Celerons. Intel now has the threads going through the processor slow down if the core gets under inoperable conditions , also while SCSI drives are great i have many of them at work mainly in the SUN boxes and servers and have used them at home before in my systems the only prob is they mostly have very small disk size, are very loud, run very very hot, tend to die more quickly and the through put on 2 drives with an 8meg cache on a raid array 0 will stand up to the average SCSI drives. While it is true that the hard drive is the biggest system bottleneck running a good SCSI card on my system with some drives from work I didn’t see much improvement. While the seek times are lower most SCSIs don’t have the burst rate that these 2 ATAs have in raid format. The other reason I decided not to go SCSI was for about the same price I paid for both ATA drives I would get only one SCSI with only 1/8 of the storage of the ATA drives. I like your point of using SCSI but the benefits were with SCSI years ago and now that the industry is fading them out there is really no reason to use them.

Ultra 320 SCSI setup as a RAID 0 has a burst data rate of 320 Mb per second, the fastest your going to do with ATA is 133Mb/second, but odds are the fastest you will see with the ATA is about 80Mb per second according to a few benchmarks that I have seen.

You are right about the cost, the Ultra 320 SCSI controller will cost you about $1000 plus the new 15,000 RPM, 74 Gig SCSI drives will cost $650 each.

A friend of mine just built a screamer machine. He built with dual AMD 64bit CPU's, 2 Gig of RAM and the drive setup described above, along with the new Radon 9800 256MB video card all over clocked and water cooled. I would be nervous about having water and electronics in the same case. This guy is extreme when it comes to his on line games. I just want to load my CAD software on that machine to see how it runs.
