Why thank you JonR. Seaman Rickamaven obviously doesn't remember what MACS(SW) means in the sailor tongue. I will explain for the folks who are not aware.
MA = my rating or my job specialty. It means "Master-at-Arms" or the Navy's version of Military Police.
CS = My rank. The C means I am a chief, the S meaning I was promoted again to Senior Chief.
Ranks follow: E-1 = Seaman recruit
E-2 = Seaman apprentice
E-3 = Seaman
E-4 = 3rd class petty officer
E-5 = 2nd class petty officer
E-6 = 1st class petty officer
E-7 = Chief petty officer
E-8 = Senior Chief petty officer (me)
E-9 = Master Chief petty officer
Then you got the college educated officers whom we senior enlisted guys have to babysit and teach that just because they have a college degree doesn't mean they know everything.
And finally the (SW) means that I am an enlisted surface warfare specialist. Which in a nutshell means that I took the time to learn a little bit about what each person's job entails aboard a warship.
Class dismissed. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em.
