Sorry to hear that, Slim.

I also have 3 cats. One of which I've had since she was a kitten for over 9 years. Honestly, I'd like to find homes for the other 2, but I couldn't imagine losing Lucy (their mom.)

Best wishes.

I'm really very sorry for your loss, Slim.I agree that you and your wife and Smokey were lucky to have one another. Perhaps after a while, you can open your heart and home to another special cat.I have an idea what you are going thru. We had to put down "Kornazoo" after 17 years. The Vet knew how much he hated coming to his office, and came to the house to euthanize him. After about a year, when I stopped thinking I was seeing him(Kornazoo), out of the corner of my eye, I knew it was time to get another cat. Again. my condolences. Tim aka "Kornazoo"

Slim , I am very sorry to hear about Smokey. I had to have a dog put to sleep recently and it was one of the hardest things that I have ever done. Someone gave me this "The Rainbow Bridge " at that time and it gave me some comfort. I hope it does the same for you and your wife. (please excuse the cut and paste)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow
Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially
close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow
Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our
special friends so they can run and play
together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and
our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are
restored to health and vigor; those who were
hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of
days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for
one small thing; they each miss someone very
special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day
comes when one suddenly stops and looks into
the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His
eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run
from the group, flying over the green grass, his
legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your
special friend finally meet, you cling together in
joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The
happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands
again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long
gone from your life but never absent from your
heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

You brought a tear to my eye. When I lost my Samantha, an old gray headed beagle, I found a web site where you can get a red brick engraved with name and date. I beautiful memorial worth twice the price.

My condolences to you and your wife who dearly loved Smokey.

I love dogs and cats. My wife & I have no children. We've been married 25 yrs. Our pets have always been like kids to us.

I wish they had longer lifespans. Our hearts have been broken so many times. May Smokey rest in peace. I feel for you Slim. Hang in there.

Its unfortuante that I have to clarify my comments but I have recieved an email calling me a bitch....I lost my grandfather last year, watched him go from a relatively healthy man to a comatose state with intermitten seizing. I wish we could have given him peace and end his suffering like that we do for our "family" of animals. Oh by the way , I can be a bitch!!!!

As one cat lover to another (I have two Birmans, i.e., Bixby and Queen) I can identify with how you feel. I take a lot of comfort in the Rainbow Bridge that eh3856 just posted or you. You might want to visit their website............
