Actually, Sociologists have long understood that religious believes exist in all cultures to provide relief from the emotional burden of mortality, among other reasons. Claiming an atheist conviction would be to embrace mortality without a 'death defying' belief and to confront life on those terms.
This seems neither non committal or particularly easy - as compared to singing Kumbaya and believing to live forever.
