According to Blabbermouth, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett was Asked what Led Zeppelin means to him, Hammett told Artisan News (see video below), "It was the soundtrack to my youth. They were pretty much the first band I actually sat down with with a guitar and tried to learn the guitar solos and the songs." He continued, "I cannot say enough about Led Zeppelin and the f--cking impact that they've had on me and my musical career. "Jimmy Page has been one of my heroes for year and years and years... He was the band. I mean, he was all-encompassing. He was a brilliant songwriter, he was a brilliant musician, he was a brilliant producer, he was a brilliant showman. I mean, he had it all - he had a great tone and a great attitude. "I mean, what's not to like about Led Zeppelin? He was such a big influence on my life."

Ya wheelie, I didn't wanna throw out a bunch of bands you never heard of. That'd be an exercise in futility.

There may be 5 bands on there not better, but equal to zep. The rest eclipse them.

I'll never know what the transition from big band, to rock and roll was like that you lived through. Honestly, it must've been amazing. Having said that, only having the music to compare at face value, without the nostalgia lets me judge them at for what they are.

Bands like Zep, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and The Stones defined Rock. If you were to ask the followers who inspired them, surely members of these bands would be mentioned. That's not to say that those who have after them are not accomplished is foolish. However, the originals didn't have the benefit of modern technology to "clean up" their sound.
