Williams isn’t picking LSU….

Who is gonna pick up the cheating mantle now that Bill is gone?
Does Kraft give out gold watches or massage gift certificates?

He was a tremendous coordinator and it’ll be a short trip to Canton.

We’ll NEVER see another coach / GM like Bill in our lifetimes. Years from now us NE haters will be able to look back and appreciate those 24 years for the greatness that they were.

Heard a couple of pretty interesting facts:

Bill has a winning record against every NFL team.

During the 24 years that Bill was HC for the Patriots, the rest of the NFL hired 213 head coaches - an average of almost 7 per team.

When he took over the Patriots job, they were perennial doormats and 37 games UNDER .500... and now they are over 100 games OVER .500, have a winning playoff record and 6 Lombardi trophies.

Bears are moving Shane Waldron the OC for Seattle. Young and smart and definitely an improvement….

yup...the days when the NFL go looking for head coaches among the top college coaches are mostly over...over the past few decades, very few have matched their college success. Another factor is that the salaries for some of the more senior successful college coaches are often higher than what the pros pay. The fertile ground is now among young bright assistants who are working for young bright HCs.

wonder if Waldron knew that Pete Carroll was gonna get tossed...maybe he woulda landed the HC at Seattle...

I became a fan in the late 60's,bout 6-7 years old, those uniforms and helmets were so cool. The first 30 years of being a fan were tough but the next 20 plus with Bill and Tom made it all worthwhile. Both will be missed but always remembered as a Patriot regardless of their final journey.

Jerod Mayo... new coach of the Pats.

How much is Harbaugh getting from Michigan now?
He's supposedly in contract negotiations delayed by the cheating scandal.

The Patriots signed Mayo to a contract extension last year and written in that contract was that he was the next in line of succession. For good or bad, Kraft considered Mayo to be the heir apparent for a while now... kinda behind the scenes. This also allowed the Patriots get around the NFL Rooney Rule (requirement to interview two minority candidates for a coaching vacancy).

I wonder if Kraft would have done this if he knew more experienced coaches like Vrabel, maybe Harbaugh, maybe Tomlin would/might be available. Mayo's only coaching experience is 5 years as the Patriot's linebacker coach. Prior to that I think he was doing sports talk radio or something after he retired from playing football.

I’mma really curious how a succession plan allows teams to bypass the Rooney Rule. I don’t care that it was the Patriots that did it, just wanna know how and why.

Google search here we come!

Edit: Well, whatdaya know, succession plans in the NFL have been done 3 times before!. And better yet, it’s within the Rooney Rule so no bypassing, cheating or sleight of hand. Nothing for NE haters to get angry about…other than the fact that Kraft was (mebbe) smart enough to recognize the next coach he wanted and how to get him onboard without all the rigmarole of the hiring process.

It's a stupid rule. Hire who you think is best.

I don't see any players complaining there's not enough Asians in the NFL.

As I understand it, if you put it in the contract ahead of time and notify the NFL that you have a line of succession, then you don't have to do the Rooney Rule. The flip side is, you kinda locked yourself in to abiding by it.

When Kraft redid the Mayo contract, that was part of the contract in order to keep Mayo from seeking other coaching jobs outside of the Patriots (keep in mind, the Patriots have been crumbling for the past few years so there might have been the sinking ship mentality going on).

Publicly they didn't beat the drum that Mayo was going to be the next in line, they beat the drum that they locked in Mayo for the foreseeable future (small news, Patriots locked up their linebacker coach under contract.... whoopie)

I'm sure Belichick, after reading the contract that Kraft made with Mayo, knew of this changing of the guard and saw the writing on the wall. That probably pissed him off. Rumors have it that Kraft wanted to move on from Belichick before this last season and they have been head butting since then. Kraft overruled some of Belichick choices and forced some of the assistant coaches on his coaching staff in 2023.

I think Belichick is a good coach but, in my opinion his time has past. Name one assistant coach in his coaching tree that has excelled. Most have failed. $hit, he hired his son to be an assistant coach. I think he's a horrible GM. Set your ego aside Bill, retire in dignity and move on.

I'm not sure Mayo is the best selection going forward but I'm not an NFL pro. Kraft made his bed so let's see how it pans out. I'm guessing at least 3 years, if they can do things right, then they can they become a viable team again.

Signed,

A Packer fan who's team is on the up stoke while living in MA surrounded by Pat's fans while their team crumbles.
