He's supposedly in contract negotiations delayed by the cheating scandal.

However if the contract with an assistant coach states that they are the heir apparent for the next coach when the other one leaves or is dismissed and you notify the NFL as such, the organization doesn't have to interview other candidates.

I could be wrong. I'm not a legal guy for NFL rules.

I don't think the mix of Belichick and Jones would work out too well. Belichick likes to be in control of everything and so does Jones. Past couple of years as the Patriots started to go down hill, Kraft started to stick his nose into the Patriots's stuff of picking players and coaches and stuff. There was some head butting as a result.

I don't think the personalities of Belichick and Jones would be a good be a good mix. Too many inflated egos between the two.
