cuz on Day 7...

I live in north central MA, about a 15 min drive from the NH border.

The tag on the "sock" of cloves says product of Argentina.

I don't know what varieties of garlic are grown in Argentina, but since they are a grocery store variety, they must be a Softneck because they have a longer storage shelf life which is a big deal for them.

It will be an interesting experiment for you nonetheless.

Hardecks are pretty standard for the Northern states because they are far more cold hardy than softnecks. The general rule is grow Softnecks in USDA Zones 8 and up, grow Hardnecks in USDA Zones 7 and lower, but many Softneck varieties can be grown in Zones 3-7. I'd probably mulch them extra heavy for the winter months, though.
It is advisable to buy your seed garlic from a garlic grower in your region, since they know what varieties produce the best for your climate.

I've only grown hardnecks, but I wouldn't mind trying Softnecks. Garden space is an issue for me, and I like the double harvest bonus with Hardnecks since they make scapes and Softnecks don't I've got 80 porcelain hardneck plants growing this year, 40 German White, and 40 Music.

Getting a late start, bout to go out there and gets some plants in the ground.

Looked at the 10 day forecast and the nighttime lows are upper 40's to 60 degrees.

Gonna start with the stuff that needs planted (due to size) first-- assorted melons, zucc, squash.

Then this evening we'll run the electric fence line. Should only take like 10 min.

Weather looks good this week. No rain forecasted. Plan to til the big garden the 7th or 8th and get that corn in on the 9th--almost a week early compared to last year.

This time of yr is busy and still makes me nervous. Need our schedules to align, the weather to cooperate, and my body to hold up.

We get too much rain. We got light rain today. What's in the forecast for the next 3 days?...More rain and even thunderstorms at times. 😞
I still have some more onion transplants yet to get into the ground

Have you planted all of your tomatoes?

Put in:

32 watermelon (Crimson Sweet, Georgia Rattlesnake & Congo)

17 honeydew & cantaloupe

35 zucchini & squash

22 cucumbers (Straight 8 & Gurkins)

Plus I weedeated around my wife's flower garden, and around the OG garden.

Still have around 175 tomato & pepper plants to do, plus that tobacco

That's not counting the direct sow plants like corn, beans & potatoes...

Gonna be a long road...

Hell no! It's way too early for me, I still have to pot up many of the seedlings I typically plant my transplants around May 15th and on. Air temps are too variable up here yet, and the soil temps are too low, and the rain!
I'll start with my container plants first before getting to the ground, which I hope won't be drenched.

We planted a set of "Mountaineer half runner" pole beans, & a set of sugar snap peas.

I do like those "Blue Lake" bush beans better though. They're more tender...

Gonna plant a bunch of em in the big garden this yr.

I'm thinking about it. Would be a cool late fall/winter project.

Also have some H99 Corojo & Habano 2000 growing.

The Nica Rustica has grown bigger, but I have more of the other two.

Plowed the big garden today.

It was tough going in the morning, but when the sun came out and the wind picked up, it dried out the garden and made it much easier to plow.

Then we put down 400 lbs of lime and 72 lbs of Triple 19 fertilizer. (By hand)

Took us about 8 1/2 hrs minus a short break for a sammich.

I need to be hooked up to an IV drip...

Ordered a Furrower blade that is compatible with my Cub Cadet R65 tiller.

Gonna try using it to put in the potatoes. So I got bolts and a furrower coming for the tiller.

Meanwhile, we're gonna try to get our beans in this week while were waiting on the tiller stuff.

Few things:

1) We're way ahead in our planting this yr. We usually don't put the first plant in until May 15. But this years temps and overall nice weather have allowed us to start early.

2) We have a lot of extra plants this yr as well. We started more than usual bc we bought a second greenhouse thingy. I dont think they've ever been healthier, either, thanks to Ray mentioning that I should use fans on them to build up their strength. Plus we fed em a few times with 1-1-1 fertilizer.

3) We're still gonna have a lot of extra space in the big garden even after we plant another 1,000 corn seeds, for a total of 2,500

So, with being way ahead, having extra plants and a lot of extra space, I think we're going to plant more tomatoes and peppers along one of the sides of the big garden. Why waste the plants if you have the space? That's my thinking anyway.

Put in three 60 ft rows of bush beans...

Blue Lake 240 seeds
Roma 240 seeds
Half runner 240 seeds

The half runner pole beans we planted a few days ago are starting to come up; same with the sugar snap peas.

Next thing we got to do is plant the tobacco. Idk when, depends on the weather.
RobertHively

Planted some tobacco for the first time ever...

Nica Rustica x 6

Habano 2000 x 10

Corojo 99 x 11

Still have quite a few in the greenhouse thingie. We'll see how many mature in there, & potentially do a second set here in a few weeks.

Saw the first little sprouts of corn and bush beans. They're barely out of the ground. Most haven't germinated yet.

We planted 1,500 "Peaches & Cream" sweet corn variety on 5/10. Want to try something different for my second set, around 6/10. Gonna go with 500 "Golden Queen" and 500 "Early Sunglow". Sunglow is the variety I unsuccessfully tried to grow last fall.

In other garden news:

*Put the new bolt on the tiller wheel axle. Tightened the bolt on the other wheel as well.

*Received our furrower blade for the tiller. Assembled it, but haven't installed yet.

*Also bought an Earthway brand garden seeder. Gonna try that on the next round of corn. I'm skeptical but we'll see...

Earthway seeder is a decent tool. I don’t use one but I have in the past. Work ok for sweet corn but I like to use some talc or graphite on the seed. Prevents jamming and helps it flow a little better. Soil needs to be worked up really fine

Peaches and cream is pretty good corn
