OK, now for something different... For those who have been reading around the forums, there has been alot of talk about CDM, or Cafe Du Monde. A wonderful spot in the heart of New Orleans for coffee...

So I thought this would be fun, I have a 13oz vacuum pak of Cafe Du Monde Coffee, automatic drip, enough for many pots of flavor filled Chicory coffee for trade. I only got one, saved from my last trip, first person covers postage with a good smoke takes it!

For those that have not been exposed to Chicory coffee with Beignets [puffy French doughnuts covered in powdered sugar] it is a match made in heaven! Its the second best reason to go to New Orleans. The first is the all the other great food!

Cheers.

"Coffee as strong as Cafe' du Monde,
Donuts are too hot to touch.
Just like a fool, when those sweet goodies cool,
I eat till I eat way too much."

Here's a recipe for them ...

BTW ... one 'most generous' fellow here send me a bag of it last week, and I've got to say ...

... it's KILLER!

I didn't think I'd like it (coffee snob that I am), but it holds up to it's reputation.

It's very tasty, and very smooth for being so black. I really liked it, and it's healthy too! Has lot's of medicinal properties ... and less caffine (actually chicory has no caffine).

... it's good stuff, for sure.

Fortunately, I have a bag that I just opened ... and it's good to give others who have never tried it, a chance to taste the 'Flavor of New Orleans' ...

... it's best with sugar and hot milk (that's the way it supposed to be drank)!

I just put a cup of milk in the microwave for one minute ...

... it probably doesn't have to be hot (if the coffee is steaming), but that is what some recipes call for ... probably so the coffee dosen't cool down too much.

... and also some say that honey is used in place of sugar!

Don't need no stinkin' sugar in my CDM.....just steaming hot milk!

Slim, chicory may not be caffine, but I would not drink this stuff late at night and then try and sleep!

Great coffee...........Sonny, "You da Man"!

With all the talk about CDM, and recollecting our visit this last December, I just had to order a few cans from their website. Is it OK to do the pee pee dance if it's coffee related??

Charlie --- chicory is an herb that is used as a relaxant and to help induce sleep, among it's many other medicinal qualitites ...

... since it's probably about half of the mixture with ground coffee, that makes it have about half the caffine of a cup of coffee ...

BTW ... more than you ever wanted to know ...

Chicory is often helpful for jaundice and for spleen problems.

The juice of the leaves and a tea made from the flowering plant promote the production of bile, the release of gallstones, and the elimination of excessive internal mucus.

They are also useful for gastritis, lack of appetite, and digestive difficulties.

A decoction of the rootstock is said to be helpful to the glandular organs or the digestive system.

For painful inflammations, try applying the boiled leaves and flowers wrapped in a cloth.

Also a spring tonic.

One ounce root in 1 pint of water used as a diuretic, laxative, folk use for jaundice, skin eruptions, slightly sedative, and mildly laxative.

Homeopathically used for liver and gall bladder ailments. Leaf extracts weaker than root extracts. In experiments, animals given chicory root extracts exhibit a slower and weaker heart rate (pulse).

It has been suggested that the plant should be researched for use in heart irregularities. Root extracts in alcohol solutions have proven anti-inflammatory effects in experiments.

Thanks Sonny ... I wasn't sure on that!

Anyway ... I don't know where Charlie got the idea this stuff is any more potent than a regular cup of coffee (as far as keeping one awake) ...
