EI, I understand your point but I think that there are better examples. I’m not sure that you could really say that Booth was a liberal (unless you consider all actors Liberals – Ha, Ha!!). I haven’t found any indication that he was a Democrat either. Anyway, being a Virginia Democrat during the Civil war would have put you on the conservative side of the fence (by today’s definition). The Democrats were for states rights and they were anti-abolitionists (not that this is a conservative idea). I also don’t agree that an Anarchist (no government) or a socialist (governmental control of production and distribution of goods, etc…) is necessarily liberal. Also Leon Czolgosz was not an official member of the Anarchist movement (like Emma Goldman, etc…) He was just a loser nobody. Charles Julius Guiteau was a crazy dirt bag who was even a bigger loser than Czolgosz. I can find no evidence that he ever belonged to any political party. He did try to join a free love movement in upstate NY but they just took his money and kicked him out. Oh well...

EI, you missed the point. You really can't take either party affiliation from 100 years ago and consider them liberal or conservative by today's definitions of these words.

Personally, I don't think that you can take today's party affiliations and brand someone a liberal or conservative by their party affiliation. Hell, everyone falls at one time or another into the liberal or conservative camps on some issues.

Sorry for the rant. You have to agree that Booth, Czolgosz & Guiteau were just crazy idiots. Particularly Czolgosz and Guiteau. I didn't really intend to highjack this thread with this debate. I just don't understand why everyone who belongs to the Democratic Party is branded a liberal and conversely why everyone who is a Republican, a conservative. Hell, I've always been a Republican and you probably think that I'm a liberal.

I guess I needed to be more clear?? McCain is one of them in the light of politics from Washington... there are many more behind the light that still care... you just don't see their names as big... some of these are Democrats also!!! who usually don't last a second seat in the house because they're not toting the same bag of chips the party wants them to hold onto....

I and my Mother have sent "Unanswered" letters to McCain because he's on the Senate Arms commitie... and my followings of the man I am not so impressed with him as I am other Democratic Senators ;0)
